Austin Mini till Suzuki Swift GTi-konvertering

Getting ready to install a Swift GTi engine in my 1975 Austin Mini 1000 cc. Going from 35 bhp to 105 bhp, or more. It is also going to get just a bit of a style makeover.

We're starting a day earlier than planned. That's what happens when the urge to work kicks in. Also, because dad is heading to warmer latitudes for the next 10 weeks. We want the Mini to be ready enough to send it for painting.

Half a day today.

I managed to sand, putty, and sand again to complete a tube on the instrument panel (fixed a dent). Then, I tackled the side panels (upholstery), which needed adjustments to fit after cutting some parts of the wheel arches. I also fine-tuned the "glove compartments/side boxes" to lock/clamp the panels. Naturally, I adjusted the old panels to create templates. The new ones will be adjusted and mounted in the final stage.

My Mini is a Mk3 and has a "lip" on the bonnet. However, since I plan to use the Mk1 grille, this lip had to be drilled away. While doing this, we discovered rust on the hood's structure. Immediate action is taken.

Sound dampening mats were fine-tuned where the seat brackets are located. At the same time, I tried the 4-point seat belts. As the rear seat is a thing of the past, it's all about the metal. Black edge trim is test-fitted.

Tomorrow, dad will lend a hand. It's time for bodywork, adjusting the flip-front brackets, and ensuring a proper fit.

So, a bit further on the journey.

Some sanding work done, sound-damping mats fine-tuned to make the seats close to the floor. Unfortunately, dad misunderstood an instruction, and he brush-painted the back of the rear seat, oops #1. So, it's time to sand and putty to remove the brush strokes.

Next, the fitting of the flip-front, and the hinges are now welded in place. Everything works fine! When we placed the bonnet, we noticed a 15mm gap between the hood and the front, oops #2. It might be that my Mk3 car has a slightly different hood compared to Mk1 cars. I've emailed the folks in the UK about this. In the worst case, I might need to buy a new bonnet. I don't want a 15 mm high and 700 mm wide air intake there.

Shortly after, we cut off the edge on the front fenders since they shouldn't be squeezed in by the edge anymore due to the flip-front. Drilling and chamfering the edges for the Dzus fasteners are also done, check.

Then, we had a visit from Jimmy at Cami Lack to go through the painting job. One request from his side was to clear the drip ledge on the roof to make it free from Bodycoat. The pulley was mounted on the machine, and it splattered like crazy! I had to 'camp' to reduce the splatter.

To be continued!

Troligtvis tillbaka vecka 5.

Må bäst tills dess!

Oh no, that could have ended badly. Apparently, there was a fire in one of the power outlets last night. Fortunately, it extinguished itself. It would have been quite depressing to come to a garage that was a pile of ashes.

First, we wanted to figure out the fit regarding the new Mk1 grille versus my Mk3 hood. Darn it. I have to get a new hood that fits the new grille. Partly to avoid the large gap and to avoid welding the rusted cross structure on the underside of the hood. We also had to weld shut the screw holes where the Mk3 grille was previously attached.

Since I plan to have dual tailpipes (one on each side), I had to cut out a piece for that.

The Dzus fasteners are now ready. However, we had to weld a small rectangular piece just above them since we suspected there would be too large a gap in the corner between the flip-front and the A-panel (the triangular part in front of the door).

Then dad built a structure with swiveling wheels so that we can easily maneuver the car when it's without the front suspension. And to facilitate for the painter. I must admit the car looks like a real beater with these wheels on. But it's practical.

The taillights were rust-protected on the inside of the trunk.

Since we lowered the car to the bottom at the back, the struts/springs are causing trouble. They jump out of their tracks when you lift the car to change tires. And during fast cornering, when the car might rise on one side, there is a great risk that they jump out of their brackets/tracks then as well. Therefore, we have constructed a swing arm stop to eliminate that risk. Of course, they are removable on the day you need to renovate/service the rear suspension.

Right now, the car is standing there waiting for painting. However, a few small things need to be arranged before it's time. For example, the four metal strips going from the roof to the fender edge need to be mounted, and the interior needs to be spray-painted. A long-awaited day is approaching!

Now there will be a break for a few weeks. Probably back in week 5.

Take care until then!

Planera, planera, planera.

Reply on post: Read through the entire thread now! Really enjoyable reading! Keep up the good work!

Plan, plan, plan. Dad is a time millionaire and has earned 10 weeks of vacation. While he's away, I'll make sure the edge trims are in place, the interior is sprayed white, and the whole setup goes to the paint shop.

However, I found some rust on the doors. And cracks in some places in the construction. A new door costs 6995 SEK ($700 / £550). Eh? Times two. And a new hood. Better-used doors are, of course, less expensive, but they refuse to send such from the UK. Let's hope for an early Brexit, and a pound crash?

I also thought about doing a compression test on the engine to get an idea of its condition. In the worst case, I might have to open it up and assess what needs to be done. And wouldn't it be nice if the engine were in good condition when the car comes back from painting, and dad returns from the heat? Then there's even a chance to drive the little rascal during the second half of the year. Fingers crossed!

I also found some pictures from before. The oldest daughter got to sit in it a few years ago. And a few pictures of transport to the current garage. I don't have a driver's license to tow a car trailer, so I thought ahead and got a 'legal trailer'. 'Snug fit,' as the Brits put it, with only about 2 cm (1") on each side. Believe me, many motorists had big eyes when I zoomed by.

Sunday – the day for working on the car. Well, it wasn't much mechanical work, more like grinding. All day. I woke up early and with strong determination, I was going to get into the car and drive to the garage. However, I had to wait a few hours for the adventures of Saturday night to wear off.

Once there, I decided to try blasting the back seat. It worked. Maybe not as fast as expected. The orbital sander did a quicker job. Barely five hours later, the back seat was sanded and the first layer of primer was applied.

Then, I looked at the problem with the hood. It fits fantastically well at the back near the windshield and on the sides next to the fenders. But then, there's a gap of 8-15 mm (0.3-0.6") between the front and the hood. There used to be a "lip" where the upper part of the Mk3 grill was attached. Now, with the Mk1 grill, the "lip" was cut off, and the gap was a fact.

I filmed some of it so that I can send it to the Brits and ask for advice.

And while my dad just crossed the Spanish border on his vacation, the Swift engine jumped out of the front frame and into the family car. Initially, I'm doing a compression test, and then we'll see where we end up.

Dad managed to put filler on the flipfront's rear edge, where the Dzus fasteners are, so those will be sanded next time. And interior painting. After that, it's time for exterior painting.

Isn't it great to have various skills in your network? My very engine-savvy friend Andreas and his dad made sure we got the engine tested. The right tools are half the job, after all. Unfortunately, it turned out that it wasn't very airtight.

So, it's time to dismantle everything and check that rascal. While I'm at it, Andreas gave me some tips on how to make it even more lively. But first, I need to remove the gearbox. Then I'll have to leave it to someone who knows the Swift engine.

The search for new doors and a hood is ongoing. The Brits are not quick to respond, and some of my questions are met with a bit of "goddag yxskaft" (literally meaning that the answer doesn't directly address the question). I almost dare not call them if they can't sell me the right things.

Well, leaving the engine, finishing up the last bits on the interior is at the top of the list. Along with buying doors and a hood. Then it's time for painting.

http://www.theminiforum.co.uk/forums/to … boot-gaps/

Reply to post: It looks good, and there's indeed a lot to do with a Swift engine if it's in poor condition. I would, however, prefer if you switch to color images. It's much more enjoyable to look at.

I searched Google and Instagram for pictures and descriptions regarding the fit of the hood. It turns out that the hood and all other sheet metal parts seem to have unique fits after all. Even if I buy a completely new hood, there's a risk of additional work on the fit.

A kind Brit on Instagram recommended a good link that discusses fitment.

http://www.theminiforum.co.uk/forums/to … boot-gaps/

As I mentioned, more work is expected, so I'm leaning towards keeping my own hood and welding a metal piece to eliminate the gap in the front.

Andreas messaged shortly after the end of the workday and enticed me to work on the engine. Naturally, I dropped everything and drove to the garage. It's nice that it's only a 5-minute drive now compared to 1.5 hours where the rest of the car is.

It was now high time to dismantle the gearbox. Unscrewed a few bolts and lifted it without any problems using the engine hoist. And off with the gearbox. Nice.

I'll take another trip tomorrow morning, and then I'll suction the oil from both the engine and the gearbox. After that, I'll place the engine on an engine stand for a better working position. I probably don't need to mention who enticed me with early morning work.

Bara. Måste.

Up at the crack of dawn, worked for half an hour, then it was time to do some tinkering. It's good to have a boss (self-employed) who is understanding when it comes to priorities at work.

Once at the garage, it was time to suction all the oil from the engine and gearbox, which went quickly. After that, I disassembled the intake, which took some time. Apparently, it's not only Mini engines that have bolts, nuts, and screws placed in strange and inaccessible locations. The injectors were dismantled, and we could observe that they could have been in better condition. Unusual to encounter such surprises.

While my dad is away, Andreas is the expert. My new co-pilot should ponder what we do next. But it's probably soon time to take the engine for a thorough inspection.

Then, I'll likely glass bead blast everything and also replace hoses, clamps, and paint the valve cover.

I surfed various UK suppliers for doors, the hood, etc. It's time-consuming if it's going to be right. And good. And it will be. It just has to be.

• • • TRANSLATION • • •

Co-pilot Andreas couldn't resist ultrasonically cleaning an injector to see how much better it could become. He likes engines. It shows.

Yesterday, we talked about some other things, and suddenly, I felt the urge to take action. After all, it's suddenly February. I therefore ordered, hopefully, the last items from the UK. Yes, I actually ordered a new hood. We'll see if it fits better since this model doesn't have a lip and hopefully goes lower to eliminate the gap to the front. Otherwise, I'll have to fine-tune with an angle grinder, weld, etc.

I will mount the engine on an engine stand soon and take it apart for a closer inspection of the engine's condition. I know absolutely nothing about engines, guessing wildly what the different parts are called. But luckily, I have co-pilot Andreas and my own dad who are knowledgeable in that area. I might film the whole disassembly so that I know how to put it back together later. It would be sad to have a handful of bolts/screws left over after assembling it.

If everything aligns, I should get the delivery from the UK in about a week. Then I can put the trim on the "seams," paint the interior, and send doors with the body for painting.

Shared joy is double joy. This afternoon, Andreas received the joyful news that his car with the new engine build was inspected and approved. We celebrated by heading to the garage and tackling the task of putting my engine on the engine stand.

Andreas called it a weekend shortly after. I stayed behind since neither kids nor wife were at home. What beats an evening in the garage?

I disassembled the water pump, and it didn't look as one might have hoped. But the plan is still to completely overhaul the engine. I'll probably continue the treasure hunt tomorrow.

Nothing special was planned for this Saturday. Then I headed to the garage and gave some love to the GTi engine.

Today, I stripped the engine further; water pump pipe, thermostat (looked like a hiding place for something), and lamella. I took the opportunity to drill new holes in the plate for the engine stand. I just need to arrange new longer bolts as the existing ones were too short before I can attach the plate and mount it on the stand.

Både YES och OH NO.

• • • TRANSLATION • • •

Both YES and OH NO. The joy of it all is that I managed to get the engine up on the stand without significant problems or time consumption, loosened the camshafts, removed and lifted the head, and disassembled the oil pan.

However, according to the UK order, everything was in stock with the Brits (be sure to find a retailer who has everything in stock), but unfortunately, I just received an email stating that the hood was on backorder. BUGGER! as the Brits themselves would say. That means I'm facing an additional shipping cost. Darn it. And it wasn't supposed to be ready to ship until March! By then, the car should be painted and ready. No matter how much you plan, there's always something that goes wrong.

Anyway, it's nice to have the engine disassembled this far. Co-pilot Andreas will swing by tomorrow and take a look at its condition. I'll probably have to take the engine block down from the stand again to remove the flywheel so that we can turn the engine around and see how all the cylinder holes look. The flywheel is currently snug against the engine stand plate and can't be turned as it looks right now. Well, I'll take care of that during the week.

Down with the engine from the engine stand, disassemble the mounting plate, unscrew the flywheel, drill one of the mounting holes for better alignment. And put everything back on the mounting plate and the engine stand. So, now we can rotate the flywheel and thus get movement on the pistons. Check.

By the way, is it common to find coarse-grained Mediterranean sand inside an engine? It looked like it, anyway. Of course, it wasn't sand, but it didn't look pretty. The engine repairers will have their work cut out for them when they inspect my engine.

One of the connecting rods was loosened, and then we removed a piston. It looked well-used, I must say. But, on the other hand, the engine turns 30 years old this year. If the other pistons look like this, it's probably enough to hone and get new piston rings. But.... you never know what's around the corner. We'll also have to wait and see what the engine repairer says.

In any case, it's reassuring that I've disassembled the engine to 90%. It's soon time to take the engine to the repair shop.
