Austin Mini till Suzuki Swift GTi-konvertering

Getting ready to install a Swift GTi engine in my 1975 Austin Mini 1000 cc. Going from 35 bhp to 105 bhp, or more. It is also going to get just a bit of a style makeover.

Reply to post: It's really coming together nicely! The new wheels look great!

This looks good; it's always fun when a project progresses at a good pace. Seems like you'll be starting it soon.

Thanks for the pep talk! Now, it's 'just' the engine that needs to be assembled. I'll do some hunting for that. Probably some small things left to discover, and then everything needs to be synchronized. How hard can it be, right? Haha.

I've found out that it has ZX6R Mikuni carburetors, so I'll take a closer look at that on both Google and YouTube. Andreas has replied to ONM regarding ignition curves, stroke length, etc. I can honestly say I didn't understand much of it, but ignition curves and numbers looked good.

Men ingen vettig sax. That sucks.

When the rest of the family goes to Ullared... I'd rather go to the garage. Once there, I was planning to cut some carpet pieces, but it proved difficult without scissors. Believe it or not, a whole garage with various tools but no decent pair of scissors. That sucks. Well, a quick visit to my dad's place fixed that, and then the scissors were in full swing.

And when the scissors aren't enough, it's time for metal shears. This time, for the side panels in the back seat, which happen to be made of covered Masonite. I had to cut and trim them a bit due to the newly manufactured wheel arches. Adjusted the fit, and then they fit perfectly!

I also painted the vertical surfaces of the side panels black. You may not see them anyway, but upon closer inspection, it should look a bit neat.

While the painted surfaces were drying, I moved on to creating a template for the compartment at the dashboard, i.e., the horizontal part. Worked on the fit with some pieces of cardboard and then made one in a single piece. I plan to cut this out in metal soon and possibly cover it in black. The wall separating the engine compartment and the cabin will get sound-damping material, and then the front panel goes on. This one will probably be covered too (black).

A quick printout of my fake switch panel served as a template to determine the placement of the rocker switches.

Tomorrow will be a full-day race, probably from 06:30 to around 20:00. We'll see how far I get.

Dessa kläs in i galon.

The matte black I painted yesterday turned out well, and measuring, templating, and cutting pieces of the carpet can indeed make one feel a bit matte. But now it's done. I bounced up at 6:00 and was in the garage by 6:15 after having a roll in the car on the way to the garage. Efficiency is key. And indeed, I was efficient; by 15:15, I was heading home to meet up with summer guests. And by then, I had accomplished everything I wanted. Nice.

- Dealt with the carpet for the rear part.
- Installed the rear part of the roll cage. A bit tricky to be alone and try to squeeze the "legs" between the B-pillars. But I solved it with straps. And the cage was in place.
- Cut holes in the carpet for the cage legs. I had to create a small carpet piece again because the purchased original carpet is cut around the side panels. Since they were cut off, I had to plug the hole with a new carpet piece.
- Double-sided tape will probably do the trick to keep the new side panels' carpet pieces in place.
- Put on the original carpet and cut holes for the seat brackets so that they lie flush against the floor (I have sound-damping material too).
- Under the rear seat cushion, a small piece of carpet was needed, of course.
- Then installed the seats and belts. Again. Sat in them for a test and "played rally" with the steering wheel, haha, yes, the itching in my fingers is real!
- Then I had time to stop by the tire shop and get the last wheel balanced.
- Out with the old, in with the new. The original fan is... large. The new one is... mini.
- Then I measured, templated, and cut pieces of metal for the instrument panel. These will be covered in vinyl. No sheet metal workers nearby, so I used a fascia plate from the hardware store. It works.
- The old front panel was brought out and trimmed a bit to match the above piece of metal. This front panel will also be covered. Or maybe I'll spray paint it. We'll see what I do in the end.
- Fine-tuned the switch panel and made markings for the positioning of the rocker switches.

A productive day, in other words.

Reply on post: Carbon fiber would have been much cooler.

It looks sleek with carbon fiber, and I've seen a lot of Minis with carbon fiber details. There are plenty of items available on various websites: side mirrors, front/back side panels, seats, entire instrument panels, full roofs, fender flares, and more.

However, my idea is retro with a racing touch.

Of course, I want something that is foolproof. It's a shame to have to tinker every now and then. I have two K-series engines, but I dare not guess their condition. However, I need them as my twin brother also has a clubman estate. Always good to have spare engines.

If there's an opportunity to sell, I'll let you know.

Reply on post: Okay. I'll have to change the head gasket again; it runs like crazy. It's quite challenging to find an engine in Sweden. I might order a new engine from England later, but there will probably be customs duties and taxes on items from there.

Well, vacation times are causing delays in the engine build. The engine workshop is also on vacation this week. I hope they assemble the little rascal so that it's ready by the end of August. At the latest.

I brought a wheel home to see if the new wheel width fits in terms of various braces, etc. At full lock, the wheel touches the front brace, but I doubt the steering lock goes that far.

And then there's the feeling of having to drill into a freshly painted door. The mounting holes in the door for the mirrors were, of course, not positioned like the actual brackets. Well, I drilled carefully, so it turned out fine. I'll try to find black screws instead so that they don't stand out too much.

When the mirrors are in place, it's time to install the window crank mechanism—yes, you read that right. In a Mini, you crank the window; after all, it's from 1975. After that, the locking mechanism goes in, and finally, the side panel and handles, etc., in aluminum look. Before that, I have to shop more from England—special plugs, window trim, etc. I'm also looking for faux leather for the instrument panel. Nothing perfect so far, neither at home nor at Minispares. Or maybe I'll just paint a metal piece. Hoping for a quick delivery so I can finish the doors.

I also firmly believe that the exhaust manifold is on its way from Down Under. The Australians wanted me to confirm my delivery address. However, I don't know how long the delivery time is from Australia.

• • • TRANSLATION • • •

Is this some kind of coordinated attack?" replied the guys at Befra Motor when I emailed them on Monday morning about the status of the engine build, and when Andreas showed up with the same question at lunch, unannounced and unaware of my email. Haha, well, now something has to happen.

Andreas measured and weighed some stuff while he was there. There apparently were two VR sensors (he has taught me what that is now), but we only need one. He also took out a connecting rod and recommended some bearing replacements in the process. Might as well get it done while everything is in pieces.

Just 10 minutes ago, Postnord showed up with a package. A light one. It was the air filter from danST Engineering in England. In the same package, there were brackets and a gasket for the fuel injection from the motorcycle carburetors.

And tomorrow, a delivery from Minispares is expected with various details for the doors. The weekend is saved.

- Toppen planas as we speak

Today, a black box arrived from the other side of the globe. To be more precise, a modest distance of 15,999 km, no less than 39.9% of the Earth's circumference. It's not every day you receive a package from Down Under. Andreas joked that it might contain a stuffed koala inside. And when I opened the packages, I actually started to wonder. Was it a mummified koala? I struggled a bit more to uncover a very well-packed exhaust manifold. Voila! Wroom wroom!

But now the exhaust manifold is finally here. So relieving. And who wouldn't rev up as happily as a dog who hasn't seen its owner for a week? Well, Andreas did. He measured and took some notes. Material thickness: 1 mm. Lightweight stuff in other words.

The weekend was "saved" when a package from the UK arrived with items (special plugs, among other things) for the doors. But... I only got 3 pieces. Granted, I did order 3 pieces, thinking that a kit of 4 special plugs was included, totaling 12 pieces, which I needed. It does state the article number and Quantity: 4 pcs. Not entirely easy to understand. Well, a new order is on its way from the UK, this time with cheap postal delivery.

Andreas has been in touch with Befra Motor:
- The bolts for the cylinder head will probably need to be replaced.
- The main bearings seemed to be singing their last song; new ones need to be ordered.
- The cylinder head is being machined as we speak.
- Then there was a question about whether I needed shims, but apparently, they are hydraulic lifters.
- The coolant channels are cleaned, but considering how it looked before, either coolant was missing, or the wrong type of coolant was used.
- The exhaust ports were reasonably sooty – an engine that hasn't been used properly, to say the least.

Well, things are rolling along.

Thank you all for your interest and support! We just crossed the threshold of 40,000 visits. Perhaps we should compete to give a ride to the person who makes the 50,000th visit... ponder that.

Let me introduce... the sacrificial lamb. A completely ordinary 1988 Suzuki Swift. The idea was to "borrow" the 75 bhp engine from this beauty, but then I came to my senses, considering the 105 bhp GTi engine.

Anyway, my dad has been at work disassembling it a bit as it's heading to the scrapyard. However, we are salvaging various engine parts from it, such as the gear lever with linkages, clutch, driveshafts, and some other odds and ends that might come in handy for the MiniSwift project.

The engine in this sacrificial lamb had only run 5,000 miles since 1988. However, the car's undercarriage was completely rusted out. And yes, it was a bit mind-boggling when it started on the first attempt after sitting untouched outdoors for 1.5 years. Perhaps that was the engine I should have gone for, instead of going to Katrineholm to buy a used GTi engine in rough condition. Well, easy to be wise after the fact. But a GTi engine is never wrong.

In other news, Befra Motor has probably ordered the latest parts for the engine for assembly. On the home front, I've received the special plugs for the doors, meaning door installation is imminent. I've also thought about cutting out the instrument panel in black plastic with a white core, you know, the type of plastic used for sign engraving on electrical cabinets, etc. I've digitally designed icons that will be engraved to the depth where the white core is visible. Clean. I'm also crossing my fingers that this sign/switch panel can be contour-cut. The idea is also to make the entire front panel in the same material, replacing what is currently in oak veneer.

A fun thing is that @thelittlecarsociety has published some of the pictures on their Instagram feed, garnering attention and appreciation from many parts of the world. Small car, huge attention!

Reply on post: Don't forget to save those stylish wheel trims before the Swift goes to the scrapyard.

Oh yes, good that you reminded me. I'm going to modify them so that they fit over my Minilite wheels, haha!

Ledsen, men inga bilder denna gång.

Men njae.

Sorry, but no pictures this time.

So, what else is happening? Not much, unfortunately. The latest update from the engine workshop was that the engine would be assembled by the end of the month. Last month, that is. But unfortunately, the engine shop had suffered a tragic event, and everything had come to a halt because of it. Two weeks ago, however, I got a new date. This month's end. Well, I don't dare to hope.

I'll give them one more week, then I'll pick up the parts and move on to another engine workshop. They've had the parts since June. Hmm.

But to cheer myself up... I ordered more stuff from the UK!

- Tachometer 0-10,000 rpm can be "handy" when the engine is "revvy" and apparently handles 8,000+ rpm without a problem. It would be foolish to settle for a lower scale on the tachometer. And I've been searching for a sleek one everywhere — Amazon, Alibaba, eBay, and various other motor parts manufacturers. Either they didn't match the retro look or they were too expensive or way too large. I mean, 125 mm in diameter... then I won't be visible! But then I saw an interior picture on Instagram and immediately wrote to the owner. He had bought it from Minispares. WTF! I have once again searched everywhere, but not where it reasonably should be. But considering the rpm scale, I honestly didn't think so. But the new one has the same font/numbers as the speedometer. Perfect match!
- Black housing for the tachometer
- New bracket for the rear number plate. The previous one I got was bent so that the ends stuck out from the tailgate. Looked like a lying skateboard ramp.
- Handle for the MK1 tailgate, i.e., a bit more period-appropriate design.
- Rubber seals for the rear side windows.
- I don't know why I should have these rubber seals because fixed glass is not available anywhere in the UK. Dalhems didn't have them either. You know, I have opening side windows, but the steel frame is not in the best condition and risks scratching the paint if you try to open them. Therefore, I thought it would be fixed glass. Anyone have a pair lying around? And no, the opening and fixed glass are not the same size. It's always good to have the original as well.
- MK1 Tailgate. I ordered one earlier, and it was... not nice. Quite uneven in pressing because it was a Non-genuine. Didn't feel quite right, but I also thought the paint shop would look it over. But no. So, it will be a Genuine Boot Lid from British Motor Heritage Limited in pressed metal. Will be painted at some point.

On the home front, my dad is about to take the sacrificial lamb further shortly. He has obtained the big blade and is going to cut the whole car after the A-pillars. The front part will be kept; the rest will be scrapped.

I'm going to get my thumbs working and assemble the doors myself.

• • • TRANSLATION • • •

Dad informs that he has cut away "some" rust from our little sacrificial lamb. The Suzuki has become a heavily reduced convertible. A stylish concept car, isn't it?

On the home front, I've traced the previous instrument panel, scanned it, recreated it in CAD (sort of) to then be contour cut in matte black plastic.
