Austin Mini till Suzuki Swift GTi-konvertering

Getting ready to install a Swift GTi engine in my 1975 Austin Mini 1000 cc. Going from 35 bhp to 105 bhp, or more. It is also going to get just a bit of a style makeover.

Bra. Nu blir det lättare med vänsterdörren. Oh boy, we were so wrong.

Reply to post: The idea behind a modification is precisely to require changes to make things work. That is, picking parts from the same model series is rarely approved, even if the function is different from what the car originally had.

As a classic example, directly fitting a multilink from a Volvo 960 onto a 940 is almost never approved because it's considered to require too little modification.

Of course, there are exceptions, and it depends a lot on how much the rest of the car has been modified.

Unfortunately, SFRO doesn't have the final say; it's the Swedish Transport Agency and the inspection that do. And we can probably figure out with the little toe how much they care about how things work, smiling.

Impressive build, by the way. It doesn't seem like a small job to swap an engine in a Mini, big_smile. Requires 'a bit' more work than dropping a T5a or T6a into a Volvo 2/7/900 series.

Reply to post: Hello Martin. Regarding the picture with the steering column, it might have been nice to install power steering from an Opel Corsa B? A really smooth electric power steering that comes with a pre-built potentiometer control on eBay at a low cost.

Sometimes you're lucky that the neighbor's slide is banging against the wall in the fresh winds at 4:40 AM. That way, you wake up earlier and can drive to the garage to work by 6:45.

Once there, the new hinges went on immediately. After that, I started fine-tuning the last bits of soundproofing mats in the upper part of the instrument panel. It's a bit tricky to get it right, and that spray adhesive sticks incredibly fast and well.

The fresh air intakes looked a bit worn as the chrome had worn off due to many years of use. After masking and a quick spray, they looked almost new again.

The brackets for the new mirror, which will be mounted on the upper part of the roll cage (between the A-pillars), needed adjustment with spacers since the diameters of the roll bars and the brackets unfortunately didn't match.

And last weekend, I had the pleasure of reliving memories when I got to ride in the neighbor's '98 Mini (still the old design). 'Plenty' of space in the cabin. I noted that there's a whopping 126 cm (50") between the sills (as shown in the picture) and 113 cm (45") between the B-pillars at shoulder height. But strangely, the cabin still feels spacious.

The mat doesn't go all the way up to the instrument panel in the regular design because the enormous fan obstructs it. Now that this has been replaced, you can see the soundproofing mat. So, I had to cut and fine-tune a piece of cardboard and then cut out the corresponding piece of mat. Not entirely easy since the last piece of mat I had was just too small. I twisted and turned the cardboard pieces in a brave attempt to get two pieces out. I had to sacrifice a small corner on one of the pieces, but fortunately, the new fan conveniently covers it.

By now, it was around lunch, and my dad had returned from a trip with the camper northward. It was delightful since we were now two and could proceed to install the doors. Just a reminder that the new doors were installed and adjusted/aligned in the door openings before painting, with an excellent fit. However, with the old hinges since the newly ordered ones were on backorder from the UK. I also believe that the doors are the second heaviest component after the engine on the car. Goodness. And I can't claim that it's the side impact guards that weigh a lot since there is no such thing. No fancy side airbags either, for that matter. But when the passenger door was in place, uh, hmm... it didn't fit well. Uneven gaps, and it was crooked. But we had resources. We had spacers in the form of rectangular pieces of metal. After many trials and tribulations, we were forced to use all spacers to get the fit right on the passenger door. We had to lift it on and off three times, though. A patience-testing fitting. But if I remembered correctly, the driver's door should fit really well ('snug fit' as the Brits would say) without any use of spacers.

The door lock didn't quite sync with the 'latch' or whatever it's called, so we had to adjust the position of the latch slightly. Luckily, there was plenty of adjustment margin. But we had to adjust further. With a round file. And then the door fit perfectly.

Great. Now, it gets easier with the left door. Oh boy, we were so wrong. The new hinges had to be trimmed a bit in the corners to fit into the A-panel against the attachment points. Of course, it was a bit tricky, and we sanded them when they were in place. However, we protected the door paint.

Then it was easy to install the door, but when we tried to close it, uh... the door opening mechanism resembled that of the new Koenigsegg Gemera (Automated twisted synchrohelix actuation doors) as the door leaned about 10 degrees at the rear, making the upper side of the door even above the roof's drip rail. Crazy. How did this happen?

Two adult people standing and scratching their scalps. Uh. What do we do now? The door fit perfectly before painting. Then we realized that it must have been the lower hinge that caused the issue. We didn't have the new ones when we fitted the door before painting, and the original hinge had a significant play, no less than 4 mm (see pictures). No wonder the fit wasn't right. The new hinge pushes the door too far back at the bottom, causing the entire door to tilt upward.

What happened next? Well, we made 'shims.' One, two, three, four, and five spacers. Yep. We tried to space the upper hinge, but nope, still didn't work. We then realized that we had to cut off 9 mm of the new hinge and weld it back together. Smack. Now, what about now? No. It leaned much less now, but now the new bolts with rounded heads in the hinge caught, making it impossible to close completely. We switched to the old bolts. But nope, still couldn't close it. Something's wrong. Then it was the door hitting the A-pillar. Hmm. So we made more "shims." And only now could we close the door. Now we just needed to "fine-tune" the fit. More shims. And finally, it was in place with evenly distributed gaps all around the door.

The door lock's position was adjusted, and when the door is now closed, it looks even and nice between the door and the rest of the body. Finished! It took us 4 hours to install/remove the right door three times, and the left door wasn't spot on until after six attempts. Goodness. "-Beware of the madmen, the madmen are closing!" So true, the madmen were tearing their hair out, but the doors barely closed at first, haha!

Finally, I just had to lower the flipfront and put on the wheels to see the big picture, and I like it! The tires do hang down a bit despite our "stops," so the car will probably be 10 cm (4") lower when lowered to the ground.

It was around 19:00, but my dad couldn't resist while I cleaned up. He poured in motor oil, and we didn't see any immediate oil leakage, which we were grateful for. He connected various wires to a battery and tested the headlights and turn signals. Hooray!

The next visit will be made shortly to check off even more items and thus approach the startup.

Retuschade även in instrumentpanelen, friskluftsintag, switchar och hastighetsmätare.

Reply to post: What a job! I mean, doors can be a real pain, and it certainly has been for you. Hehe, if my neighbor's slide had woken me up at night, they wouldn't have had a slide for much longer. My sleep is sacred, and I have a terrible morning mood. 😛 Adjusting doors is an eternal task. 😞

Reply to post: Fitting doors is always equally patience-testing... well done! 👍

Dad has managed to pour in gearbox oil and apply Tectyl in the door sides and A-pillars. Misunderstand me correctly, no gearbox oil in the doors, haha. It's soon time to mount the door panels, in other words.

Hmm, but he's a bit under the weather, so I'll wait to sneak over to the garage in these times.

Instead, I took the opportunity to retouch the interior. Luckily, I had photographed the door panel with my phone straight from the front at home in the photo studio (where I assembled the doors), so I could easily Photoshop it onto the "raw" door in the garage. I also retouched the instrument panel, air vents, switches, and speedometer.

What do you think, should I have the transverse beam between the sills in white (where the gear lever is) or cover it with black matte? Compare the different Photoshop sketches.

The interior might be too black with a matte-covered beam since the instrument panel also becomes black. What do you think?

Svart helt klart.

Söndagen, vilodagen? Njae. Full rulle i garaget i två dagar.

”–It’s alive!”, i alla fall tändningen och startmotorn. Alla lampor med respektive funktioner funkade. Varvräknaren återstår att kopplas in.

Reply to post: Black would be obvious for me. Looks messy in white. But you do as you want.
Best regards, T.

Reply to post: Black, definitely.

Sunday, the day of rest? Well, not really. Full speed in the garage for two days. We started by removing the doors. The spacer washers we had made to adjust the doors were untreated, so it was a quick fix. Sand and paint. Then we had some issues with the door stops pressing into the sealed hole in the A-pillars. The door stop bracket in the door was cut off while we glued gaskets where the door stops were previously. It looked like a really poor attempt to build side impact protection. If only it were painted black, haha.

Dad primed the steering column cover while I matte painted the air intakes with various locks and covers. The steering column cover was also matte painted.

Then it was high time to install the motorcycle carburetor kit. We were advised to install pipe pieces inside the hoses to avoid swirls. We cut four pipe pieces, and then I sanded the insides to make them polished and fresh. The whole kit was then mounted in place. There is indeed little space where it should sit. We might put some kind of damping pad to prevent the carburetor kit from contacting the windshield wiper motor.

When that was done, Dad continued to connect the electricity in the cabin, specifically to the instrument panel. The switches were put in place, and after testing, most of it worked. Some minor adjustments are needed before everything fits. The oil pressure sensor is attached in a place where Austin must have used child labor because there was certainly no room for larger hands. The tube to the sensor had to be tightened, but it eventually worked.

Unfortunately, the spray paint on the steering column bracket had come off in a couple of places, so I sanded it all down, primed, and matte painted it again. When I put the steering column in place, we noticed that the brake pedal hit the steering column at the lowest setting. So... we had to disassemble the pedal, drill a new bracket, and weld on a washer for extra surface area, cutting off a corner of the old pedal that now stuck out. An hour of extra work due to a 2 cm (1") placement adjustment. When this was done, I cut the matte pieces that would go on the wheel arches. Now it's starting to look clear even in the front part of the cabin.

We hung the doors, and before the window trims were installed, we screwed on the mirrors. Then I installed clips that are really tricky to handle. They sit well but are tricky to remove if you have to take off the trims for some reason. Of course, I did it wrong on the other door and installed the window trim before the mirror. Did I take it off? No, of course not. Because of the clips. But, we got the mirror on after all.

While I fiddled with the clips, Dad was nagged to install the rear window. The new window trim is much softer than the old one, making it easy to get the window in place. Normally, you should press a chrome "core" into a groove in the trim, but we have switched to black. I thought I'd minimize the chrome details on the car. We also brought out the Lexan side windows, but we didn't have time to install them until it was time to close for this time. In my younger years, I celebrated the TV series NileCity with a sticker on the Mini, you know, the comedy series with Johan Rheborg, Robert Gustavsson, Jonas Inde, and Henrik Schyffert (Swedish comedians). Haha, a lot of memories came to life. However, the windows will be tinted in the future, so this sticker will probably be removed.

You can do a lot in two days indeed. Now it's a bit unclear how to proceed. The electrical work is 95% complete. "-It's alive!", at least the ignition and starter motor. All lights with their respective functions worked. The tachometer and the control box remain to be connected. But it's around now that I don't understand how to proceed. Probably, we'll have to take the car to an engine workshop that connects the final parts, starts it up, and adjusts it with mapping, rolling dyno, etc.

Maybe a visit to the garage during Thursday and Friday to install the rear side windows and connect the remaining electrical components. Before that, I'll have to check if someone can powder coat/foil the grille. The installation of the black panels (hat shelf) by the instrument panel will not be done until the control box is connected and in place. However, we can install the door panels next time. It looks more and more finished. Dzus locks also need to be attached to the flipfront. Holes are already made, but I'm a bit worried that those seams/lists that were squeezed onto the A-pillars minutes before painting have shifted the fit of the Dzus locks slightly. It might be necessary to move the locking mechanism on the A-panel so that the gap between the body and the flipfront looks proper.

Reply to post: Nice job as usual! 😊 Yes, that rear window decal brought a smile to my face!

Oh yes, Stingray excitement, I certainly had a smile on my face when I unpacked that old gem, haha.

Got up early and quickly headed to the garage. But slowly uphill... let's take a quick look back.

Well, when I had driven about 4 miles, smoke started coming from the engine compartment of the daily driver. Ehh?! Stopped immediately, checked the towing, which would cost SEK 1,500 to take the car to the nearest car workshop, about 5 minutes away. Uh, no. Drove on my own and asked the car workshop to take a look as soon as possible. Maybe Tuesday at the earliest. Had to call the in-laws and ask to be picked up and driven home. Thanks for that little detour! Once home, it was just a matter of jumping into the existing company car, and then we were back on track. About 3.5 hours delayed. So, my day's work with the Mini in the garage was, of course, much smaller than planned. Something that didn't get smaller, however, was the hole in the wallet when the car workshop called and actually had time to look at the car and said it was the water pump that had cut, etc. After asking them to do a few other small things while they were at it, I was SEK 9001 poorer. Lovely start to the day.

Once in the garage, it was just a matter of getting started. Dad was away, so I did various simpler things that didn't require four hands.

I started by installing the new rearview mirror and aimed it fairly well. It sits high up but provides fantastic visibility both back and to the side thanks to its curved and wide shape. Accidentally ordered one too many on eBay. Anyone interested?

It looks like I'll keep the bar at the seat mounts in white since I think black matte makes the whole cabin too black. I like the contrast. I don't think it will be too messy since I've gotten used to the white bar at this point. However, the bar is a bit worn with holes, dents, and weld seams here and there. Therefore, I'm thinking of cutting out and bending sheet metal, which I will then paint. It went fairly quickly to measure and cut out templates in cardboard.

When I previously installed the damping mats at the wheel arches, I discovered small holes in the sheet metal. Immediately realized that they were screw holes where I had attached the previous mat with sheet metal screws. These small holes were patched, and I also patched the hole at the two air intakes. These patches were then sprayed with black threshold protective mass.

Then more spray painting. I removed the pedals (hopefully for the last time) and spray-painted the pedal stand matte black. The bolt for the steering column bracket as well.

The edge of the sheet metal at the right side window was in poor condition; rust had made some marks, but it had been fixed before painting. However, I wanted to make sure it stays in good condition, so I sprayed it with white threshold protective mass. When dad connects next time, we will probably install the windows. Fixed ones, as the opening windows led to that rust attack on the sheet metal edge.

Before closing for the day, I secured the cables to the ignition lock and indicator. Tomorrow, I'll attach the steering column cover, and then everything on the steering column is ready. I might need to adjust the side mirrors, and worst case, I might have to remove them again to access a nut inside the bracket to be able to adjust the arm. There is a tension screw on the outside, but unfortunately, I can't adjust the arm without risking breaking it.

Until tomorrow!

Today, only half a day in the garage was planned, and that's what happened. Things take time. Mounting the steering column cover was first on the list. Put on the cover. The opening of the cover was tight, so the cables had to be moved to lie on the sides of the steering column instead of on top. Take off the cover, adjust, and put on the cover. The two parts of the cover didn't seem to fit together. There was a 7 mm gap on the left side. Hmm. Take it off. Bend the metal brackets on the steering column. Put it back on. Hmm, now the indicator arm hit the hole, only when I want to turn left. Hmm. Take it off again. Loosen the indicator arm, turn the bracket a bit to the right. Tighten. Put on the cover. There we go. Finished.

The second point today was to prepare for the installation of the new door stops that I happened to have seen on Instagram. Bought a while ago, and now it's getting closer... One end is attached to the fold between the A-pillar and the wheel arch, while the other is attached to the door. Obviously. But I'm afraid the door sheet metal will give way if the wind catches the door on a beautiful but windy day. So, I'll screw on a small sheet metal washer to distribute the forces. Then I'm not entirely sure how the strap itself should be attached. I've seen two different ways (one solution: see borrowed pictures). Here, the strap is folded 180°. And I've seen another way where it's not folded at all. Hmm. I have to evaluate the two different ways considering I have a burst bolt there and see how the strap moves when I close the door. But it will probably sort itself out.

The third point was to paint the handbrake matte black.

The fourth and final point for today was to put on the window trim on the other Lexan side window. Next time, we'll have acquired a nylon string to put on the windows so that the rubber trim slides more easily over the body edges.

I think, and hope, that after the next session, it will be time to move the car to a garage closer to the final destination. Andreas and I will look at the final connections of the control box, fuel pressure regulator (to be purchased), crankcase ventilation valve (to be purchased), and high-performance coil, etc. Then maybe there will be a spontaneous departure to someone knowledgeable about engines for startup and adjustment of the motorcycle carburetors. Shortly thereafter, it will go for mapping. But a lot can happen on the way. Keep your fingers crossed! 😊

Wow! Now we're talkin'!

Borrade.

Wow! Now we're talking! Things are getting checked off the list for sure! Dad had done a bit earlier in the week, and I had some work to do. So, it became a long-awaited spontaneous trip – off to the garage!

Unfortunately, we had previously attached the radiator to the engine, and since the engine shakes... well, it was time to make new radiator mounts, in other words. They were placed on the front frame instead.

I cleaned the rear hatch seal and glued it in place. Later in the day, I noticed that it didn't seal properly. I'll have to get a new one in the future.

I had prepped the side rear windows last week, so now it was finally time for installation. A bit of lubricant and nylon string worked wonders to make the installation easier. It went quickly and smoothly, and there were no problems getting the trim over the body edge and a bit onto the headliner. Shortly after that, we installed the front windshield. A bit sweaty about the risk of cracking it. It was expected to be tricky to get the trim over the glass edge, especially at the round corners.

The spray nozzles were a bit large. Or perhaps the holes were possibly too small? Well, a little nervous nonetheless that the paint would chip when I enlarged the holes. Looked like a dentist drill. Not the same sound, though, haha. Smack, and the spray nozzles were in place. So, we moved on to installing the windshield wipers. Before we are completely done with the front and rear windows, we need to insert a black core (Fillet Strip) into the trims. This requires a special tool, and we have it... somewhere. We actually made one in 1993 when we renovated the car for the first time. Unfortunately, our memory failed us, so we decided to make a new one. But then we realized that it probably wouldn't work. We'll have to find another solution shortly.

I proceeded to pop rivet the homemade extra "plates" on the inside of the doors to distribute the force in case the door blows open. Then we sprayed Tectyl into the door joints one last time. Finally, it was time to put on the door panels. And it went quickly. Too quickly, it turned out. I hadn't pre-drilled holes in the door panel where the handle should be... and I didn't want to pull off those tricky clips and risk tearing the door panel. Difficult to know where the handle should go, in other words. Fortunately, I had done it right on the left door a month ago, so I measured where the handle should be. And... right on target. Nice.

The door stops in the form of reinforced straps from the 60s turned out really well, both when extended and when the door is closed. Phew! So nice that it's done now.

Remaining on today's list was to install the Dzus locks on the flip front and to fit the engine hood. Again, you get nervous when facing the task of drilling into a newly painted car. At first, we thought that the fit against the seam on the A-pillar wouldn't be good, so we tinkered a bit and considered lifting everything about 5 mm, but realized that it wouldn't be possible to do it smoothly and satisfactorily. We test-fitted the Dzus locks without having drilled/screwed them in place. But... they fit well! Masked up and marked out the holes. Drilled. And they will be screwed in place shortly.

The engine hood has always been difficult to get right in terms of fitting. Much to think about since it needs to be adjusted in all directions. Tighten, try to lower the engine hood... ouch, no, loosen, adjust the bracket, try again. Took a bit of time, but now it sits nicely. However, it's an old car that got a newly produced engine hood, so it doesn't fit perfectly, and there are some gaps. But it's retro combined with new. That's how it is. And I have to commend Dad, again, for having the patience when I insisted on fixing the gap at the front between the hood and the front. It took, of course, much extra time, but it turned out so much better. I'll send the grille for powder coating (glossy black) as two different wrapping companies considered it too complicated to wrap the grille.

Before heading home, we received the fuel pressure regulator in the mail. A must since the pressure in the current fuel pump was too high for the motorcycle carburetor kit. And when I got home, there was yet another package on the driveway – side bars. We'll see if these are mounted after all. It shouldn't be difficult to get in and out. But they will probably be helpful in case of a collision.

So... in summary: Making good progress. A few small things will be fixed shortly, and the next time I go to the garage, it will be with a car trailer! 😊

Stylish.

Reply to post: Hello, I hope you remembered to rustproof in the holes you ground for the windshield washer nozzles. It tends to rust quickly in those places otherwise. Best regards, T.

I quote myself from last year... June 17th: "Today is a warm and sunny June day – a day to remember." That was the day we brought the car home from painting. And yesterday, 51 weeks later, we picked up the car from the garage. It was time to bring it closer to home.

After work, Andreas and I stopped by the city and picked up a car trailer, and then we headed east. It takes time to drive with a trailer. According to speed regulations. We quickly realized that it was going to be a late evening.

Once there, Dad cut the last screws he had used for attaching the Dzus locks. Then Dad gave Andreas a little overview of what we've been up to lately. Andreas and I will do a few final things before startup, and shortly after that, it's time to bring it in for fine-tuning at the engine workshop. I had painted the hood latch at home in the morning but hadn't assembled it, so we had to strap the hood before heading home.

While Dad and Andreas pushed and winched the little car onto the trailer, I ran around, flew the drone, and took photos with the camera. Before this, I had, of course, packed Tiguan full of various cage-related stuff/spare parts.

Then we strapped it down, and there was plenty of room on the small car trailer. Twilight came quickly, and we headed home. Stopped at a gas station for a quick hot dog and refreshing cola around midnight. Shortly afterward, the car was unloaded, and Andreas was dismissed. I continued for over an hour unloading all the small stuff.

Today, I picked up a freshly powder-coated grille. And smack, it was in place. And I also test-fitted the Mini emblem. Stylish.

Reply to post: Almost there, really fun to see it come together. When is the target for the maiden voyage?

Within a couple of weeks, I hope that we have connected the tachometer and control box and that we have managed to start it up. Then the motorcycle carburetor kit will be fine-tuned. And then onto the rolling dyno. SFRO and the Vehicle Inspection will probably want to take a look at it before letting it loose.

Batteri levereras i veckan.

Spännande tider framöver!

Fuel pressure regulator is spelled Malpassi. Andreas and I made a quick round in the new garage and adjusted the fuel pressure regulator using a gadget that Andreas had put together at work earlier in the day. It looked like an amazing contraption – and it did wonders!

Once in place, we opened various boxes to find some extra gauges, and oh my, what nostalgia. A gauge and instruction manual from December 1, 1946. It showed some fancy figures for cars from the 1930s, etc. Museum pieces, in other words, but things were better back then, and the gauge showed great accuracy.

Andreas rigged the tank and created pressure with air, and then he turned 2.25 turns counterclockwise on the FPR (Fuel Pressure Regulator) to reduce the pressure and fine-tuned back 0.25 turns (my note: total 2 turns) to reach 2.1 psi, about 0.15 bar, which we believe is the best setting. The fuel pressure from the fuel pump provides 0.35 psi, but the motorcycle carburetor requires a pressure in the range of 0.11-0.16 bar.

Earlier in the week, I received a shipment from the UK with various final items. I realized that a few more things are needed, but these items were back-ordered, but it's nothing that will make or break the build. While waiting for these items, I will make sure to attach the fuel pressure regulator in a suitable place, connect/plug vacuum hoses, connect the control box, etc. Various trims to be mounted on the flip front arrived in the mailbox the other day. The battery will be delivered this week.

Exciting times ahead! 😊

Men i sensommar...!

Reply to post: Read through the entire thread! One does get a bit envious! Good luck and keep up the pace, and you'll probably be out driving this summer. 😄

Thanks for the encouragement! Yes, I need to get a catch tank apparently, but then there's not much left. Vacation times at various engine workshops will probably cause a slight delay. But in late summer...!
