Austin Mini till Suzuki Swift GTi-konvertering

Getting ready to install a Swift GTi engine in my 1975 Austin Mini 1000 cc. Going from 35 bhp to 105 bhp, or more. It is also going to get just a bit of a style makeover.

5) Ringde också Claessons MC i Bromölla. De kunde hjälpa till. I vinter. Men servicekillen jag snackade med tog sig tid och vi snackade i säkert 30 minuter. Extremt hjälpsam och bjöd på en del tips. Han fick även länken till bloggen så att han kunde kika på diverse bilder därifrån. Han trodde att vi rengjort förgasarna i fel ordning. Vi skulle ha blästrat först, sen ultraljudstvättat. Vi blästrade förvisso för att ultraljudstvätten inte gjorde det hundra rent. Jag sa också att vi hade en bränsletrycksregulator som var ställd till 0,15 bar (enligt manualen). Han tyckte det var väldigt lågt inställt då dessa gamla förgasare ska suga in bensinen med vakuum. För litet tryck kan leda till att den suger luft, inte bensin. Så inledningsvis två saker att testa;

a) förbikoppla bränsletrycksregulatorn och starta upp.

Anyone have a working recipe for motorcycle carburetors on a car? I checked the float bowls, so I know that 2 tablespoons of 95-octane are on the ingredient list, at least, haha. The carburetors are now disassembled down to the smallest detail again. I'll inspect the holes in the nozzles, etc., to make sure they're not clogged. I checked that a while ago, but it was, of course, before we tried to start the engine. Perhaps there were blasting residues left in the channels, wandering around in the construction during the startup attempt. But it's not reasonable for all four carburetors to be affected by that. So, I've been looking around a bit...

1) Bra i Gasen AB in Uddevalla could assist with the basic adjustment. But not until the fall. Hmpf. Well, what can you say, if you're the best in the industry, you're in demand and fully booked, indeed.
2) Therefore, I tried to contact JP Motorsport, but they didn't have time to help but suggested that the floats probably didn't have the right angle. I haven't adjusted these plates, so they should be the same as set by UK-Dan, and he has "started" them before selling.
3) I called a local motorcycle service authorized by Kawasaki, but they knew nothing about motorcycle carburetors that should be on a car. They suggested JP Motorsport. Yeah, you know.
4) I also contacted Mickes Motor in Växjö. Fiesta_Racing here on Garaget recommended them. They had done motorcycle carburetor adjustments for his Ford. He installed the carburetor kit, and the engine started right away. Awaiting email response from Mickes Motor.
5)I also called Claessons MC in Bromölla. They could help. This winter. But the service guy I talked to took the time, and we chatted for at least 30 minutes. Extremely helpful and gave some tips. He also got the link to the blog to look at various pictures. He thought we cleaned the carburetors in the wrong order. We should have sandblasted first, then ultrasonically cleaned. We did sandblast because ultrasonic cleaning didn't make it a hundred percent clean. I also mentioned that we had a fuel pressure regulator set to 0.15 bar (according to the manual). He thought it was set very low since these old carburetors should suck in fuel with vacuum. Too little pressure can cause it to suck air, not fuel. So initially, two things to test:

a) Bypass the fuel pressure regulator and start it up. If fuel flows out of the discharge nozzles, it's, of course, too high pressure, but the engine should start.
b) If the above doesn't happen, we should ultrasonically clean and blow out the channels. And test engine start again.

If none of this works, we'll have to send these carburetors somewhere...

Hehe.

Japp, funkar, tvärstopp i blåsandet.

Reply to post: Never fun with a bunch of issues that you can't quite put your finger on. Have you checked if Bike in Trollhättan still exists? They might be able to help you with some more information.

Reply to post: This is unfortunately the wrong time of year to try to get help from people working with motorcycles... Approaching the motorcycle season where "everyone" needs to service their motorcycles, etc... hmm

Lucif3r... what, is it motorcycle season now?! Hehe. Yes, one could have pulled their xxxxx fingers earlier this winter and contacted the workshops. Well. Thanks for the tip HG_, I'll check it out asap.

Ole dole doff... currently tinkering with carburetor details and simultaneously browsing Holland's foremost motorcycle spare parts site on the phone. Mmm, buy a new used kit or go completely bald from stress and frustration over tinkering with the existing carburetors?

Dad googled "exploded view motorcycle carburetor" and spotted the spare parts site. And there were indeed parts! Maybe I'm considering getting another kit, of the same kind, and popping it into the engine compartment, hoping for the best...

Will probably try adjusting the slow-speed jets a bit first. Not entirely sure which jet it is, there are quite a few. Need to check the exploded view again to be on the safe side. I've loosened the adjustment screw with the narrow tip by three turns now, hoping it helps with the fuel flow.

While everything was disassembled, I also tried blowing into the fuel hose opening, and there is a clear path to the carburetors. Tried tilting the kit so that the floats changed angle and thus sealed. Yep, it works, complete stop in the blowing. Tight. Also tried blowing through them individually. They all seal four. But it was probably already established since there were two tablespoons of gasoline in each float bowl. But that's where it doesn't go any further. Maybe the slow-speed jet is to blame. And now I've loosened them. Will install and test soon.

Otherwise, it will be necessary to increase the pressure in the fuel pressure regulator, or simply bypass it to revert to the fuel pump's capacity. It will probably flow, but hopefully, gasoline will come and start, otherwise... it will probably be buying that extra kit.

And I know one screw that should be tight at least. The drain plug, haha. It flowed straight through last time and splashed the engine compartment significantly. Tightly tightened now.

Förgasarmodell: Mikuni G412 A T920
Lågfartsmunstycke #12,5
Huvudmunstycke 160

On carburetors, there is always a basic setting which is 1.5 turns. I think you have too small a slow-speed jet, what size do you have? And which motorcycle do they come from? You have probably mentioned it, but where?

The last time I checked my Garage page, I had received a message – a gift from above! Kim (uazbuhanka), a helping hand from the north, had contacted me and asked if he could help with the carburetors. Absolutely!

I called him and explained the background briefly, and then we discussed back and forth. Kim asked me to check various numbers stamped on the different parts.

Carburetor model: Mikuni G412 A T920 Low-speed jet #12.5 Main jet 160

Following tips and advice: 1) The air screw should be screwed to the bottom and then loosened by -1.5 turns (+/- 0.5 turns). Right there, I realized that I had screwed -2.5 turns as a "basic setting" in previous startup attempts and another -3 turns this week because I thought the screw was too tight and restricted the supply.

1) The slow-speed jet had the size #12.5, which Kim considered to be far too small, i.e., incorrectly sized. Risk that the engine couldn't pull gasoline through these small holes. Tried to insert a pin into the hole but, of course, it didn't go in as it is 0.6 mm. Peeled a plastic-coated steel wire that was 0.35 mm, but it didn't go in either. Therefore, ordering larger variants of the slow-speed jets in sizes #37.5-40 as recommended by Kim.
2) "How is the fuel level in the float bowls?" - a good question. Difficult to find out. I know I drained 2 tablespoons of gasoline per carburetor. Kim wondered if the carburetor kit was at the right angle compared to how they are mounted on a bike and that possibly the angle, together with the fuel level in the float bowls, made the slow-speed jets not "lie" wet and couldn't absorb fuel.
3) "How is the stroke length of the Swift engine compared to the Kawasaki engine?" Many good questions. If the Swift engine has a shorter stroke length compared to the longer stroke length of the motorcycle engine, maybe it doesn't have time to pull in gasoline.
4) How is the test run in the setup performed by danST in the UK? Exhaust system, camshaft, and air filter affect how everything fits together. Also, the fact that motorcycle carburetors have been on a 600 cc while the Swift engine is 1300 cc.
5) In the next startup attempt, we will also test by blocking the carburetors/trumpet holes to create suction, thereby pulling in the fuel.

There are indeed many details that must work together for it to function. Goodness, so much to think about. Luckily, there are professionals like Kim out there in our elongated country!

And my dad, of all people, has googled and found the same carburetor kit online! He is a bit of a computer opponent, haha. But such a kit is in the shopping cart anyway. Probably good to have such an extra kit to pick spare parts from and compare, I think. Or I might try to mount this directly on the car since it probably has all standard settings done, even if the slow-speed jets are probably wrong (#12.5) even on this kit.

Mumma!

Oh yes! #1 - I just realized it's a short week! So nice.
Oh yes! #2 - A carburetor kit from Boonstra Parts in Holland just arrived. And it's indeed in much better condition than the one I received from danST in the UK. I quickly removed all the bubble wrap and immediately unscrewed one float bowl cover to take a look. Yum! In very good condition there too. It feels like Mount Everest has fallen from my shoulders. Of course, I was curious if this kit is also incorrectly jetted, i.e., with #12.5 slow-speed jets, and it was. But new ones with larger holes are on the way. Unfortunately, the mail carrier was just here, so they may be delivered on Friday.

So, tomorrow I will test this newly purchased used carburetor kit. I'll attach it to the engine and test the startup. Then we'll see. If it starts, that would be gold; otherwise, I'll have to wait for the slow-speed jets to arrive.

This kit also had a TPS (Throttle Position Sensor), which the other one didn't. This TPS might help achieve a good engine idle in the future.

Until next time!

Reply to post: Nice!

Reply to post: silverado350, that's exactly what I'm doing, hehe. I'll attach this newly purchased kit, and if it works, I'll scrap the other one. Or keep it as a sacrificial lamb for spare parts. Everything else is rigged for this specific carburetor kit, so it would be crazy to switch to something completely different. For the moment, who knows, haha.

Christer at Braigasen.se is a hero – he managed to send the slow-speed jets in time, and Postnord just delivered them a little while ago! Nice, now I have what I need. For the moment.

Carburetor pro Kim wondered if my kit was mounted at the same angle in the car as on the bike, ensuring that the installation angle doesn't mess up with the float bowls and flows, etc. I grabbed my phone and measured the angles on both the intake manifold and the engine block. The engine tilts forward about 3.5°, and the intake manifold's opening is at 36°. I checked a previous CAD drawing I received from danST in the UK, and he had a theoretical angle of 30°. Well, a minor difference of 2.5° shouldn't cause too much trouble, I hope.

Skillnaden i Toe in blev ju förstås stor beroende i vilket läge jag höll linjalen.

Reply to post: Looks good! Remember to install the lambda sensor.

Reply to post: Exciting times, fingers crossed!

A somewhat calmer period has swept over my advertising agency. So, why not fix and tweak the carburetors...? Well, not today. More on that in a moment.

Instead, today I replaced the fixed 'Radius arm to subframe brackets' with an adjustable variant. With these in place, I can control Toe in/out and Camber. The rear wheels have a lot of Toe in right now, and quite a bit of positive Camber too. It looks crazy, especially when the front wheels have excessive Toe out (which will be reduced, of course) and a lot of negative Camber.

So, I had to remove the old brackets and install the new ones. I adjusted Toe in using a long steel ruler that I held along the threshold and towards the wheel hub. The threshold is not entirely straight, so I had to test it twice; once with the ruler against the front part of the threshold and once against the rear part of the threshold. The difference in Toe in was significant, depending on how I held the ruler. But I bolted everything while bracing with a wrench/lever so that I would achieve negative Camber even on the rear wheels. And it turned out significantly better! I held an IKEA shelf against the rim and then compared it to the front wheels.

In the pictures, you can see the difference for yourself; the right rear wheel after adjustment compared to the left rear wheel before adjustment. I also measured to see how much a few millimeters of adjustment gives in degrees. I pushed up the wheel axle by 5.7 mm on the left rear wheel. I'll probably have to raise it a bit more to achieve the same Camber on both sides. This, of course, needs to be fine-tuned during a proper wheel alignment at a workshop.

Lower control arms were purchased earlier this year. I partially removed the one in place to make it easier to measure and compare. Darn it, it turned out that the existing ones were shorter than the ones I had ordered. This means that the negative Camber that is present now will become much more if I install the new longer control arms. Hmm. What a mistake. If I hold the IKEA shelf against the rim, there is about a 20 mm gap on the upper edge of the front wheel compared to the 10 mm gap on the rear wheel. The question is whether I even try to get it reasonably right, i.e., buy additional control arms (shorter) to correct the Camber on the front wheels. But it was fun to wrench, anyway, haha!

Oh, the carburetors... My dad has kept himself away due to restrictions and while waiting for the vaccine. And he has done well. But wouldn't you know it, he gets infected in the days around vaccination? Crazy, but fortunately, it was "only" a couple of weeks with semi-mild symptoms. And with antibodies and a vaccine dose in his body, it's safe to come over and tinker with the carburetors.

So, we're getting to work tomorrow, and then we'll see where it all ends. I've been reading up on the carburetors lately and emailed Dan in the UK. At first, he claimed never to touch the slow-speed jets, just tweaks the air screw a bit, and his kit works on the test engine. In a subsequent email, he agrees that the #12.5 slow-speed jet might be a bit small. Yeah. So I've fitted #40 and set up the nanometer to ensure the correct fuel pressure (0.15 bar). Maybe there'll be an adjustment to the maximum 0.20 bar if it still gives trouble. But with the newly purchased used carburetor kit and #40, it would be darn if it doesn't start. But it's going to be nice weather tomorrow, so I'll have to slather my back with sunscreen if I'm going to lean down into the engine bay on the coop all day. I might even remove the entire flip front for better access.

You'll get a report tomorrow evening!

Men. Vad. I. Helvete. Startade den? Ja, men nej.

Svänghjulet stod rätt, men rotorn stod något fel. Justerad och så testade vi igen. Nada. Men. Vad. I. Helvete.

So far.

But. What. The. Hell. Did it start? Well, yes and no. It started for 5 seconds and then died. It even smelled like exhaust. But then it got cranky. Admittedly, I had cranked up the fuel pressure to the maximum 0.20 bar and fitted slow-speed jet #40 in the carburetors. Fortunately, the engine gets gasoline, hooray! But probably a bit too much. I tried reducing the fuel pressure to the recommended 0.15 bar, but nothing happened in terms of the engine starting. Probably still cranky. Out with the spark plugs, wet, of course. Dried them and ran the engine without plugs, and then we got four lovely fountains of gasoline shooting straight up from the cylinder holes. Dried. Dried a bit more. And a bit more. Then we took lunch and let it stand and dry a bit more.

I actually tried fitting my UK kit. Nope, no fuel is flowing through them at all, even though the air screw was restored to the standard 1.5 turns out. Hmm. Off with the UK kit and back with the Holland kit, changing to the standard #12.5 but keeping the fuel pressure at 0.15 bar. It cranked but no ignition with gasoline. Is no fuel suddenly getting to the engine now? But now it started flowing from the air bleed pipes. Hmm. How does this happen? Messaged both Andreas and carburetor-expert Kim. Got some input and went on to check the ignition. The flywheel was correct, but the rotor was slightly off. Adjusted it, and then we tried again. Nada. Just flooding again. Drying everywhere. Kim was kind enough to call and discuss a bit about what's going on under the hood. He suggested that it's getting too much gasoline and asked us to lower the pressure further, down to 0.05, which is far below what the carburetors should have. And also to recheck the ignition. Said and done. Tried again but couldn't get the engine to cough to life, and it flooded again. This time from the joints at the air bleed pipes. But. What. The. Hell. Unscrewed the Holland kit and snatched the air bleed pipes from the UK kit in case they weren't sealing properly. And why is it leaking from there, there's no pressure at all? Back with the Holland kit. Leakage again. I give up.

After brushing away the tufts of hair from the driveway, we started adjusting the wheel alignment instead. If you can't get an engine running, make sure the car looks good when it's standing completely still on all four. My dad brought some string and pipes that we stretched around the car at the height of the wheel hubs. Measured and adjusted so that the distances were evenly distributed all around. Then measured the front and rear dimensions on each wheel to figure out how much Toe in and Toe out it had. Turns out the front wheels needed some adjustment, which we knew beforehand. Loosened one front wheel and adjusted the tie rod 3 turns. Put the wheel back on, measured, and... crazy. A bit too much in the wrong direction this time. Screwed back 2 turns. Put the wheel back on. There it was.

Then we moved on to the rear wheels and had to adjust Toe in on the right rear wheel, of course. Off with the wheel, levered with various tools, and tightened the nuts. Now then, yes, somewhat better. Went over all measurements again, made small adjustments, and now we think we're reasonably happy with the wheel alignment. So far.

But that assembly called the engine... it's starting to get really taxing now. It's good that we're getting gasoline now, at least. Sorry to disappoint you, but this is something far beyond my comfort zone and knowledge. And the workshops are busy. Starting to lose interest if I'm being completely honest. Unfortunately, leaning towards waiting for help from those who know, like in late autumn. But hope is the last thing to leave.

Anyway, tomorrow I'll put the car on four Dolly's so that I can at least maneuver the car in the studio in an easy way. Twist it around and move it a bit wherever I want, so to speak. Then you can say that you've taken the car for a little spin anyway, haha! A Dolly can handle a weight of 640 kg. That's what the entire car weighs. So, in theory, I could keep one Dolly and return the other three, just need to balance the car correctly on the Dolly I keep, haha!

Ja du Cuefa. Jag. Vet. Inte. Hmpf, puh, argh!

Thank god it's Friday!

Reply to post: Oh my... That is a really stubborn, grumpy engine. As I said many pages ago, I would have switched to injection a looong time ago tongue It feels considerably easier by now. And I suspect hair-saving.

Reply to post: How. The. Hell. Do. You. Manage?!

Well, Cuefa. I. Don't. Know. Hmpf, phew, argh! How much longer do I have to commute between hope and despair? But just when I'm about to lose the "spark" the most, carburetor pro Kim contacts me. He had some thoughts regarding the crankshaft position and that cylinder 1 is at the top. After a quick check, it's at 5° advance, cylinder 1 at the top (TDC), and the rotor has just passed distributor cap post 1 (counterclockwise). Olof at ONM made an inspection hole in another distributor cap we had given him. And the firing order 1-3-4-2 is correct.

Later in the day, Kim called and said it's with 1000 percent certainty that it's the intake hoses that are the problem. You know, those rascals that I had to buy slightly longer to get some distance to the bulkhead, and that I inserted steel pipes inside to eliminate swirls and stiffen the whole thing? Since the engine creates a vacuum, these hoses "implode" as they are quite soft, which means that the vacuum formed is not sufficient to, in turn, draw in the gasoline or something like that. Hence, continued flooding even with lower fuel pressure. Well well... we might be onto something after all!

Later in the day, Kim messaged and mentioned that the spark plugs might have short-circuited when the gasoline gushed into the engine with the too high pressure. I checked on Youtube just now and tested them with a multimeter, yup, they work.

So, it's time to plug those pieces of pipe back into the hoses. Before that, I'll cut them off by about 3 mm so that the steel pipe doesn't touch the intake pipe and rub off aluminum debris that might get into the cylinder bores.

Thank god it's Friday! And a big thanks, Kim (uazbuhanka), you're a rock!
