Austin Mini till Suzuki Swift GTi-konvertering

Getting ready to install a Swift GTi engine in my 1975 Austin Mini 1000 cc. Going from 35 bhp to 105 bhp, or more. It is also going to get just a bit of a style makeover.

Testing testing, testar färgfilm i kameran.

Reply to post: I agree with a previous comment. Black and white pictures are so flat and boring. Regarding the engine block, it looks like you need to give it a thorough cleaning and ensure that all coolant channels are open. The residues of water and glycol have crystallized, and it can be challenging to remove everything. Also, don't be stingy; replace pistons and, of course, all bearings, clutch with pressure plate and disc, cam drive, and renovate the entire cylinder head. But, I'm sure your buddy knows better than me.

Reply to post: Something I don't understand is how you can incur an extra shipping cost when it's them who caused the issue. The parts were in stock when you ordered, then you received an email saying the hood was on backorder. In that case, shouldn't they cover the shipping cost? At least, that's what I think...No, now something has to happen again. Co-pilot Andreas enticed me to the garage for a short while. It was time to mark what should be thoroughly cleaned before it's time for sandblasting. So, I just had to get to work and mark injectors, water pipes, thermostat, starter motor, intake, distributor, and valve cover. I thought the door and trunk hinges could also use some attention.

Andreas showed the do's and don'ts in the blasting cabinet so that an amateur like me doesn't ruin the entire garage with dust everywhere. But now I have it under control.

Quickly moved on to write a to-do list and a quick mental calculation of what I need to buy to complete the engine overhaul. Many small streams make a big river, as someone coined a phrase long ago. Applicable even to this project. But I want it to be good. And then you can't skimp either.

The actual cleaning and sandblasting might start this week. Andreas would go to a workshop for another matter and give them a heads up about a Swift engine on the way. Hopefully, the engine will be ready for delivery to the engine workshop in a couple of weeks. One must have some time off between tasks.

The good news is that the Brits seemed to find a hood after all. Time will tell. Expected delivery in a week.

And some exciting news too. Testing, testing, testing color film in the camera. Or on the screen. Or both. I thought I was genuinely colorblind, but that wasn't the case, just a "button on the digital camera". Enjoy! NOTE! Editing tons of images take many hours. The reason I made all previous images in black and white is to skip all the color adjustments due to the mix of lightbulb/ambient light in every picture. But I do agree, it looks pretty dull with black and white pictures. But I guess I have to put those extra hours into editing. Note, the car will not be finished in quite some time due to all this editing.

Finally, I thought it would be fun to print out Mr. Bean on thicker cardboard and have him in the car, placing him in the front seat when parked.

Reply to post: Thank you for switching to color film... ;P

Time flies when you're having fun – a week of skiing with the family put the project on hold temporarily. But today, I was back at it. Cleaning various aluminum parts just before sandblasting. I've filmed where all the hoses, bolts, and screws are located so that I don't make any mistakes later when everything needs to be reassembled. Naturally, I'll be getting new hoses and hose clamps, etc.

The cleaning does a lot for the results and paves the way for sandblasting. Wow, what a difference! Tomorrow evening, I'll probably go for another round to sandblast the remaining parts. My hope is to leave the engine at the workshop by the end of the week.

And tomorrow, a shipment from the UK arrives with doors (and a hood?) etc. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they indeed found the right hood so that I don't have to wait for it for another few weeks.

Smuts, grundfärg, original orange färg och senaste mörkgrönmetallic färg åker all världens väg.

Reply to post: Exciting if it's the right one!

It looks completely right. The question is whether the fit is perfect or if I'll have to tinker with an angle grinder and weld after all.

Dirt, primer, original orange color, and the latest dark green metallic color are all going away. After a thorough cleaning, all the paint is removed. It's reassuring to see that dirty and older parts can look like new after sandblasting. However, I realized that the hinges looked a bit rough in some places and that some had a significant play in the hinge mechanism. I'll probably order new ones immediately as they're also intended for painting.

The valve cover turned out very nice. It will be painted in the company's red color in the future. Now, I'm just waiting for the new 8x13" wheels before I head off with all the stuff to the garage where the car is. Exterior painting will only happen after I've painted the interior.

Since I'm well into the sandblasting process, only three details remain. I'll probably tackle those tonight. Then I'll see how the workshop wants to receive the engine, in parts or reasonably assembled.

So, now all the relevant parts are sandblasted. I'll check with co-pilot Andreas and the workshop to see how they prefer to receive the engine parts. Then it's just a matter of waiting while they put their touch on the engine. In the meantime, I'll pick up the control unit and explore possibilities with it according to Andreas.

Not gött.
Not gött.

Status on the MiniSwift build:

1) Dad is returning from a long vacation. Nice.
2) SFRO (car builder authority) claims that a modified vehicle must be privately owned. Mine is a company car now. I had received approval from an inspector who no longer works there. Not good.
3) The Agency of Transportation will take a closer look at the possibility regarding the interpretation of the rule and any potential exemptions. Perhaps good. I must not forget to register it privately as soon as possible, just to be on the safe side.
4) I have measured the length of the bonnet. My existing Mk3 hood is 68.5 cm (27"), resulting in an 8-15 mm (0.3-0.6) gap. And the new bonnet I received with the delivery the other week is... 68.5 cm. Not good. I will still have to cut and weld a spacer so that it works with the front panel, i.e., so that the gap disappears. In the pictures, you can see that the upper edge of the grille is in line with the upper edge of the front panel, which is correct. And that the sides of the bonnet fit nicely next to the transitions of the fenders, but unfortunately, there is a significant gap between the bonnet and the front panel, and thus the grille. #Headache

And I should weigh the setup so that I know the final weight if I decide to use the rule about power increase, i.e., max 20 bhp per 100 kg (220 lbs). According to Wikipedia, a Mini weighs 630-770 kg (1.3901.700 lbs) depending on the model year and interior. This means a range of 126-154 bhp depending on weight. According to the registration certificate, my car weighs 700 kg. I have indeed installed a larger and therefore heavier engine but removed the rear seat, etc. We'll see what the final weight ends up being. However, I have seen Minis where they have put in a Hayabusa motorcycle engine with 200 hp. And then half of the car is cut away to accommodate the tubular frame and engine, so the rule about 20 bhp per 100 kg is likely not applicable. But I don't want that much power.

I'll wait to send the engine to the workshop. I'll pick up the front suspension and control unit so that the workshop has these when they want to test start the package. And possibly order suitable engine parts. It might be good to have the items close at hand if I'm going to assemble the engine.

When I'm picking up some stuff, I'll drop off the bonnet and doors, etc., and check the fit of these new parts. If everything fits, exterior painting is within reach. I'll probably go over the interior with spray paint when I'm in the garage in the next few days.

TGIF soon.

C-stolparna kläs in med liknande innertaksmaterial. Svart även det. Sen kommer det svarta sidopaneler bakom stolarna. Och baksätet spraylackas denna gång.

TGIF soon. Small items are coming from the UK shortly, and I'll take a day off from work on Friday to make a quick push on the car. It's quite a distance from where I live, so there won't be many visits. But the goal for Friday is clear:

- Paint the interior
- Check the fit of the new hood and doors
- Bring home the front suspension and control box

In the shipment from the UK a few weeks ago, I also received new rings for the headlights, bumpers, clips, window trims, and gaskets. I had also bought black door stops to act as stops for the rear swing arms, preventing them from going too far down and causing the springs to come out of their tracks.

Then I'll probably think about a solution regarding the attachment of the 4-point seat belts. Right now, the idea is to attach them to the "hat shelf" behind the rear seat, or I'll supplement the cage with a horizontal tube and attach the belts there.

The headliner is now black, and the C-pillars will be covered with similar headliner material, also in black. Then, black side panels will be added behind the seats. The rear seat will be spray-painted this time.

TBT, aka Throwback Thursday... you haven't forgotten how cool the car is going to be. A lot of engine pictures lately, but here are some favorite pictures again – and in color!

Heading to the garage where the car is in a few hours. Will probably work for a few intense evening hours today and then up early for some Friday fun with the MiniSwift in the garage.

Co-pilot Andreas absorbs all the info online about GTi engines and also suggested switching to E85 – an environmental car from 1975 is not bad!

The camera is loaded with "color film" and ready to document tonight's adventures. Until next time!

• • • TRANSLATION • • •

The brits are probably good at many many things, but not electrical systems, and car part fitment (sorry to say). We test-fitted the doors. Hmm. At this point, one could have wished to renovate a Volvo 850 instead – that comes with straight lines, excellent fit. But, I made it difficult for myself and got an old classic Austin Mini – a curvy car with a lot of different shapes. And with that comes, yes, deviations in fit.

We mounted the doors on and off probably 5 times per side, used spacer washers, hammered sheet metal, cut with an angle grinder, filed holes, tweaked the doors – all to make all the lines sync. But shame on those who give up.

Tomorrow will be the assembly of the front suspension, flipfront, and sheer frustration over the hood, with 110% certainty, not fitting, i.e., the gap to the front panel. Once that has been reviewed and adjusted, I'll "just" paint the interior a few times. Nice to have a day off on Friday – TGIF!

06.15. Rise and shine!

06:15. Rise and shine! Just over a quarter later, I was on site to vacuum the floor around the car and also inside. Someone had apparently dusted the place with blasting dust. Well, soon time for the first layer of spray paint on the interior – rear seat, B-pillar, instrument panel with A-pillar.

Before painting, the following was done:
- Front suspension was assembled. Again. A damn job with the fitting of the bolts. Again. Did this on my own as my dad slept in.
- The flipfront was assembled.
- New hood was mounted.
- Frustration over the poor fit occurred as expected. So, we had to pry a bit on the hood to get the fit right.
- We measured the gap and cut out the equivalent from the old hood.
- Sanded the edge of the new hood for better welding bead adhesion.
- Wiped the interior with thinner.

And then I painted. Will probably do another round before it's time to put everything together for this time. After lunch, my dad will weld the hood so that the gap becomes a thing of the past.

Then the flipfront and front suspension will be disassembled. Again. The front suspension will be taken home to be brought with the engine and accessories to the engine workshop. I've heard it can be useful when they want to test-start the engine.

Now it's lunchtime. A new post will come later today.

There you go, now it's the weekend! My dad has done a great job extending the hood and ensuring that the fit is perfect!

The interior has been spray-painted three times with gray and white primer, and now awaits a final layer with the right white and possibly clear coat. A short session with plastic padding on the hood, sanding, and then everything will go for painting!

I brought home the front suspension, alternator, exhaust manifold, control box, engine mounts, and two tires in the car. This should turn out well! On the home front, there will be some thinking about the engine and new parts. E85 is worth considering for a turn.

Have a nice weekend!

Mobilbilder i all ära...

Dad says hello from the east coast and mentions that the instrument panel and A-pillars have received a final coat of paint. However, I might have to hand him a system camera next time I visit. Mobile pictures have their charm...

The glove compartment in a Mini is not exactly a hatch. It's more of a general area between the doors and under the speedometer, like a shelf. I have the original instrument panel, but I'm thinking of making some adjustments. The buttons for low beam, windshield wipers, and washer are likely to be replaced with switches. Retro and cool.

In just over an hour, I'll be heading to Andreas with a package, also known as the control box. I'll bring the SFRO book and the Swift manual, and we'll see what we can find in these books. He checked the internet the other day and was planning to double-check things with some experts in his network. Sounds exciting.

• • • TRANSLATION • • •

Dad sends greetings from the garage:

- The backrest of the rear seat is fully painted, using spray paint this time. To minimize dust spreading, the seating area will be sprayed at a later time. The B-pillars are also fully painted now. Does anyone else think that the middle part of the backrest looks like a welding mask?
- The C-pillar's covering has been test-fitted to determine if we need to spray black in the area so that the orange doesn't show in the end when the felt mat, window, and rubber seal are in place.
- Be gentle... when I removed the "seam" trim, I wasn't quite kind. I've checked with the Brits to see if they've sent the latest order or not. It would be nice if I could get a couple of seams in that shipment. They need to be put on and then painted together with the whole car. The seams at the back were never removed; I only did that at the front due to the flipfront exchange.
- Hornbach's (DIY-store) door stop, aka the swing arm stop, worked wonders to "lock" the movement so that the rear springs didn't fall out of their track when lifting the car. Or taking a curve at higher speeds.
- The flipfront's hinges got a round of spray paint. Even such a insignificant detail must feel appreciated.

Oooooh, vad roligt!

Oooooh, how exciting! Andreas called and asked if I wanted to join on a spontaneous outing on an early Friday afternoon – we headed to the engine workshop. Just before departure, I spoke with SFRO and got some decision support regarding a possible E85 conversion. On the way to the engine workshop, Andreas and I discussed and weighed the pros against the cons, limitations against possibilities. But it seems that we're opting for the safe route – gasoline. A car weighing 700 kg doesn't need an unreasonable amount of power.

On the way home, we discussed the sequence of tasks to make everything fall into place. We still don't know if honing will be enough or if we'll need to bore. Only then will we know what needs to be ordered or not. Andreas throws out some hooks on various forums hoping for answers regarding X, Y, Z, and so on. I must admit that I probably look like a nodding doll. But I'm learning along the way. Andreas is extremely meticulous and knowledgeable, so my trust is substantial.

Earlier today, I made a trip to Biltema to purchase threshold protection mass for the inside of the flipfront, clear lacquer for the interior, and matte black paint for the trunk.

The Brits also got in touch and informed me that my previous order hasn't been dispatched yet. I took the opportunity to include the "seams" but also new door stops with a retro look. You know, when you're forced to widen the hinge holes by double to make the door fit acceptably, we naturally encountered problems. The original door stops touched the A-pillar when trying to close the door. We tinkered a bit, but then, by chance, I saw these door stops with a retro look on Instagram earlier this week (borrowed image). Since I have regular doors (unlike the image), I'll probably screw this door stop into the sheet metal on the inside of the door, but outside the vinyl-covered black panel.

WTF! We're in March for god's sake!

Britterna lär skicka lite smådelar (gångjärn, sömmar mm) under veckan. I hope.

D-Day and P-post – as in engine delivery and celebrating 100 posts in this thread.

Alright, Wednesday. A bit of work at the advertising agency. Had a chat with Andreas yesterday, and after some consideration, I'm changing the pistons since the existing ones were on the verge of being "used up." New pistons will be ordered as soon as the engine workshop has examined the engine block and determined whether it needs honing or boring.

Said and done, I packed everything up and just handed the whole package to the engine workshop. Check. Now I just need to put together a wish list of what I want to be done. Expected delivery in early May. And then I also hope that the car is ready for painting.

In the meantime, I removed the injectors for a quick inspection and cleaning. They will be sent to a workshop up north for a more thorough cleaning and flow test.

BTW, I ordered wheels from Spain on December 27, with a 4-5 week delivery time (mid-February). Unfortunately, I haven't seen a trace of them. No news either, but after pressing them, they said the "foundry will get in touch" when they know more. That was two weeks ago. WTF! We're in March for god's sake!

The Brits are supposed to send some small parts (hinges, seams, etc.) during the week. I hope. When these items arrive, I'll take a trip to the car and assemble various parts. And then... the car will be painted!

*Update: Just called the Brits who manufacture the wheels (ordered through a supplier in Spain). Couldn't find any sites where they produced the wheel size I wanted, but I found a blog with a Mini featuring exactly the size I desired. Did some Google searching and found the Spaniard. But... umm, the Brits will get the casting in four weeks (best-case scenario). Then they need two to three weeks to manufacture and paint them as it's high season now (no kidding, but not in January/February). Then they'll be shipped to Spain. And then sent from there to me. We're talking about a delay of 17-18 weeks! Good grief.
