Austin Mini till Suzuki Swift GTi-konvertering

Getting ready to install a Swift GTi engine in my 1975 Austin Mini 1000 cc. Going from 35 bhp to 105 bhp, or more. It is also going to get just a bit of a style makeover.

Statusuppdatering:
1) Order status: Shipped. Finally.
Nice.

Status update:
1) Order status: Shipped. Finally. The shipment from the UK will arrive next Friday.
2) Cami Lack will probably get in touch shortly once they've made some progress so I can document the process with photos.
3) Camshafts have been delivered to Agap, and after a discussion between the experts (Andreas and Agap), grinding will start shortly. Andreas will, however, measure valve clearance, lift, and check opening hours. Then, shims will be procured.
4) The new pistons are expected to arrive at the end of the month. Nice.
5) A switch (power switch) has been purchased to design a custom part of the instrument panel. We'll see if it will be brushed aluminum or black-coated.

Snabba puckar.

That's fast! The pistons are already on the way, as Andreas mentioned last night. This means that Malmö Motorrenovering can bore and deck the block in the very near future. And who knows, if Agap is quick with the camshaft grinding, assembly might be possible in early June. That would be really great.

And it's exciting to get something back to photograph, hehe. A bit empty on pictures now when all the parts are scattered across different companies.

Hockey and Team Sweden are all well and good (SWE-RUS), but when Andreas comes by with the new pistons, interest in the hockey World Championship diminishes rapidly. Couldn't resist capturing a piston with a studio photo, of course. It's a shame that these small, finely forged, shiny "It's my preciousssss" things have to be hidden in the engine block...

Today there was a quick delivery of pistons from JE Pistons to MMR – boring and planing of the engine block will be completed in the beginning of the first week of June. Tomorrow I'll pick up the package from the UK, and early next week, I'll head to Cami Lack to deliver the seams and photograph the progress of the grinding work.

- UK-leverans. Check.
- Borrning/planing av motorblock. Snart Check.
- Slipning av kamaxlar. Snart Check.
- Lackering. Snart Check.

"–Finally!" exclaimed the English counterpart to Gert Fylking (Swedish comedian). Today, the seams were delivered. It only took 2.5 months to get them here. And that's after canceling one order and placing a new one with a competitor. These seams will be puttied and clamped on the joints in the A-pillars. Then everything will be painted.

Well, there was a decent little assembly of door straps, door hinges, a minimalist cabin heater (the original fan was huuuuge), hinges for a tiltable license plate (hangs down when you have large packages/golf bag in the trunk and the rear hatch must be open).

I'll be back on Tuesday after photographing some grinding/filling work at Cami Lack.

- UK delivery. Check.
- Boring/planing of the engine block. Soon Check.
- Grinding of camshafts. Soon Check.
- Painting. Soon Check.

Wow! Either June 4th came unusually early this year, or Malmö Motorrenovering was incredibly fast with planing, boring, and honing! And it looks so nice. Luckily, I was in Malmö for a client visit when Andreas messaged and said everything was ready, so I swung by and picked up the engine block and pistons. Now we're waiting for Agap's work on the camshafts.

Exciting things are happening!

Reply to post: Wow, how awesome it turned out! 😊

The one who seeks, finds. In my case, I found pictures from 25 years ago when I was renovating the Mini shortly after buying it.

However, youthful patience wasn't at its best—I thought the renovation took too long with a lot of filling and sanding. I just wanted to get the little Mini up and running. When we later painted it ourselves in the garage, the result reflected the lack of proper prep work, despite my dad's steady hand with the spray gun. The key was insufficient groundwork. But we were reasonably satisfied with the outcome and even graced the cover of Mini Life magazine published by Mini Club Sweden.

We had some fun years with the car and took some long trips (three years of college studies in Borlänge) before I shelved the engine. Over fifteen years later, I acquired the used Swift engine. Now I realize that both the earlier subpar prep work and the uncertainty about the condition of the used engine make it time-consuming and costly. However, it's definitely not the time to pause this fun project. Instead, it calls for determination and decisiveness—full speed ahead!

Today, I handed the injectors over to Andreas and then headed to CaMi Lack to capture the work there.

And there it stood in a corner. It felt like there was more filler than sheet metal on the car. But Jimmy and Kent said the body was very uneven. Hmm, I guess I'll blame that pimply teenager who didn't have better patience 25 years ago.

Well, the filling and sanding work is underway, but it will be a while before I see it painted. Still, I'm completely convinced that Jimmy and Kent will turn it into a real gem.

I annat fall får man kanske modifiera torpedväggen. Under tiden lär jag läsa på mer. Det lär bli en extra kostnad. Of course.

New day in the MiniSwift build, and with that comes new insights and decision-making.

Overtake renovated the existing injectors but pointed out that the flow is working but on the edge. After all, they are 31 years old. Two of them had over 10% worse flow than the other two. Hmm. Maybe it's time to buy two new ones on eBay and then realize that they became TOO good compared to the better pair and be forced to buy two more?

Andreas therefore explored the market on eBay and at the same time spotted a sponsored ad for motorcycle carburetors (conversion kit). Interesting. I checked out the site, carefully read about the pros and cons, and spent two hours one Friday evening looking at similar solutions on YouTube.

With the existing fuel injection system, there are some pros and cons. This means a forced upgrade of the control box, and I have to modify the tank and arrange a fuel pump and return. At the same time, this can be difficult to adjust and thus get an uneven idle and all that it can entail, etc. But with the motorcycle conversion kit, you can apparently control individual carburetors, get a completely different character on the engine, and also an easily adjustable system that rarely malfunctions. On various forums and YouTube videos, it seems to be the only right thing to do if you have an older engine (older than 20 years).

Andreas will check with the company (Brits again, oh no) and also measure how much the existing system builds in depth compared to a possible new kit. Otherwise, you might have to modify the bulkhead. In the meantime, I'll read more. It will be an additional cost. Of course. But I'll save on not having to change the control box, a new kit with injectors and fuel pump, fuel tank, and unnecessarily much precious time if the old one should malfunction.

Building a car and completely renovating it is not easy. And things take new turns all the time. Mostly unforeseen ones. This was certainly nothing I anticipated when I started. Things have become much more complicated during the course of the project. But it's probably and inevitably the case when you choose to rebuild so that you get a five-speed engine that is more reliable and runs on 95 octane instead of a four-speed on 98 octane (mixing in lead substitute with every refueling).

Updates are coming in fast now!

I just checked with CaMi Lack to see if they have made progress on the underwork. And indeed they have! It's even primed and just waiting for the seams to be cut and assembled before painting.

So, I'm sending a messenger (dad) tomorrow to take care of it and ask him to take photos at the same time. New pictures will be available tomorrow night if dad gets the technical part right (Facetimed recently to get the file transfer process right).

Allright, here we go... bilen är helgrå nu, dvs grundad en första gång. Allt.

Exciting project and a pleasant thread to read. Well done!

Alright, here we go... the car is all gray now, meaning it has been primed for the first time. Everything. CaMi Lack had some extra time, so now the deal is that the ENTIRE car will be delivered painted at the same time, unlike the previous information that only the body would be returned. So good to hear.

Dad took some pictures during this morning's process while he cut the seams (moldings), snapped on clips, puttyed, and mounted the moldings on the A-pillars. Now only a small string of puttying remains. Then the car will be sanded a bit, primed again, and then stand and "cure" for a week before painting. And then, my friends, I will be there to sneak a peek and take pictures while Jimmy applies the color! Well, white and black, of course. White car, black roof.

Kent at CaMi Lack apparently took some pictures of the process last week, so he will come back with some photos. I'll see if I post these later.

The Englishmen with the delayed rims are on vacation and will be back in a week. They apparently received the items from the foundry, so they will probably start manufacturing the rims shortly, if they haven't already. I dare not hope too much anyway. Wonder why?

Andreas sent an email to danST Engineering regarding dimensions for the Bike Carb Kit so that this contraption can be squeezed under the hood and that we don't have to make alterations to the bulkhead. Just received back CAD drawings as a PDF, so they are now printed out. Will double-check with the motor workshop where the engine is tomorrow how the size of the old injection compares to the Bike Carb Kit. Keep your fingers crossed.

In summary, I'm relieved that the car is now primed! Heads up soon when it's painted. Then more pictures will come!

Reply to post: Thank you. Glad you appreciate the thread!

It's like Christmas today! The camshafts from AGAP arrived, looking like a pair of hardcore flutes... but no, they were indeed the camshafts. So nice!

Återkommer i frågan.

Reply to post: Wonderful! Do you think you'll have it rolling under its own power before the snow arrives?

Uh, oooh, well, yes, maybe, I hope so. I did say that the car would be painted in January, but it's happening in two weeks, around mid-June. I had to wait unnecessarily long for the seams from the UK, and CaMi had to delay the primer work by a month due to high workload. So, I don't dare hope for too much.

There are still some uncertainties regarding the engine, and that can take time. Everything has to align in the end. The first parts have been spruced up, and then we'll see what else the engine workshop finds on the 1988 engine. I don't know the status of the bearings, etc. SFRO also needs to inspect the build.

But before the snow... we usually don't get snow in Skåne until March, so there's plenty of time, haha! But please keep your fingers crossed... not for the snow to come early, but for me to finish reasonably before late autumn.

All the details are going to the engine workshop now, and I hope any small items are easily accessible through Swedish retailers. Then it needs to be assembled. After that, Swift's drive shafts need to be joined with Mini's drive shafts. Then there's work on the fuel system, steering, and wiring too.

Dad has an acquaintance who has done drag racing. He suggested that a turbo would be appropriate... but I'm not sure. I'll have to call and check with him and what objections he might have about the motorcycle carburetor kit. We'll see. I'll come back to that question.
