Austin Mini till Suzuki Swift GTi-konvertering

Getting ready to install a Swift GTi engine in my 1975 Austin Mini 1000 cc. Going from 35 bhp to 105 bhp, or more. It is also going to get just a bit of a style makeover.

Hvor bestilte du de? Jeg vil også ha noe slikt... :-)

Jag beställde via www.framptonsplates.com. Bra service.

Reply to post: Great signs! Where did you order those? I want something like that too... :-)

I ordered through www.framptonsplates.com. Good service. It actually requires documentation that you own that specific registration number. I chose to go with the Car show plate, which doesn't require any documentation at all.

You can choose a lot to make it even more personal. You can, for example, choose smaller numbers/letters, but also whether you want beveled edges on the black plate, or if you want a white border around the plate or numbers/letters in 3D style in either silver or white, or foiled numbers/letters.

• • • TRANSLATION • • •

Reply to post: You can always buy a personalized Swedish plate... I'm not sure if 'brexit' is available or allowed, though. And it costs quite a bit, too. But then you would at least have a legal plate to drive around with.

Lucif3r, do you mean like this? A photoshopped version. But one of those costs 6,000 SEK and is valid for 10 years. And the English Framptonsplates are lettered manually as they are riveted by hand, while the Swedish Transport Agency does it automatically and probably poorly typeset (if I may use graphic terms, hehe), meaning uneven spacing between the letters around the I.

Men först... byggbesiktning!

Reply to post: Yes, exactly. Unfortunately, that's the only way to have a 'fun' plate legally on the road.

Reply to post: Nice detail with the plate 😄 and in English style, it's what makes the whole thing.

Tomorrow will be an exciting day. It will be an SFRO day. An inspector is coming by to check out my little/big project. Through a phone call before the meeting, some questions have come up, but I hope everything will go well since I've done it the way a couple of other Mini conversions have been built in Sweden and approved by both the Vehicle Inspection and SFRO. It would be foolish of me, as an inexperienced car builder, to build in an untested way, so I did a study visit to a guy in Borås a couple of years ago and looked and photographed his Mini a lot. We have still faced quite a few tricky problems enough times, but problems are meant to be solved!

Tomorrow, my dad will also come by because he wants to bypass the control unit and connect the ignition system in a way that is more similar to the original ignition system and see if the irregular sparks become more even and regular. It's the ignition system and carburetors that are the big question marks right now. A 'small' detail before we can start the engine, in other words, haha. Otherwise, there's not much left to do on the car. Keep your fingers crossed!

By the way, I've received a lot of attention, followers, and questions on Instagram. That garage picture with the front of the car went bananas and gathered 20,063 likes on various Instagram accounts worldwide – from Australia, Japan, Europe, and the USA. By the way, how much does it cost to fly a small car to different continents? It would be fun to experience the world in this little car. I follow a Mini owner on Instagram who takes pictures of his Mini every day. Not surprising since he lives in sunny California. The weather in Sweden is, after all, 'slightly' different, so the surroundings and weather might not be as inviting. Well, my koja will be photographed and filmed in abundance when it's done, anyway. But first... car build inspection!

Then D-day was completed, or rather SFRO-day. There was a certain tension, had we built it correctly and met the requirements on at least four points to classify it as a modified vehicle? After a couple of hours, it became clear that it would probably pass with flying colors. The protocol and pictures will be sent for further review before the construction is approved – so far. Then there will be the final inspection in the usual way.

After the completed construction inspection, we made sure to set up an extra battery and spray starting gas into the intake nozzles, turned the key, and... indeed, it fires up nicely on all four cylinders, both individually and together! So relieving.

Tomorrow, I will contact danST Engineering regarding additional costs and time for the carburetor kit since we had to perform a thorough inspection and ultrasonic cleaning to get them right. They will be sandblasted immediately and then assembled again.

Now... I'm going to sleep well!

Dan säljer visst sådana, men...

Reply to post: Such a crazy build! Nice that SFRO has approved the work so far - I can imagine that the shoulders feel a bit less burdened after that.

An envelope arrived in the mail today. Four nice papers from SFRO; an invoice, two sheets about the vehicle logbook, and a work order. Small things that are quickly addressed fortunately. I had to complement with some dimensions and other details for the protocol to be completed.

One of the action points was to install the original version of the seat belts. So it was a quick trip into the piles of spare parts. Fortunately, they were found quite promptly. Of course, I completely forgot how they were supposed to be installed, so I had to search on YouTube, haha! The retraction mechanism itself is not a pretty sight, but this lump fits between the contoured seat and the B-pillar. The protocol and pictures taken during the inspection have been forwarded within SFRO for a double-check, and a response is expected within a week.

And I just received a response from Dan in the UK regarding the carburetor kit. He argues that the carburetors have been empty for too long, hence the crystal formation. The kit has indeed been dry for a while, but that doesn't explain all the dirt. But getting something in compensation is probably not going to happen. He mentioned that they don't break down the carburetors into the smallest detail (as I've had to do) as it would take too much time considering the price. According to him, the kit should have worked during testing. Well, but the ultrasonic cleaning that Andreas did has significantly improved the condition. And likely, we need to sandblast them and get new float needles as they were a bit worn. I took out a magnifying glass and caliper and scrutinized the small devils. Shortly thereafter, I found similar ones on eBay in terms of dimensions, etc. Dan apparently sells such, but...

Reply to post: Here is a company in Sweden that has everything and a little more when it comes to carburetors: Bra i Gasen.

Thank you for the tip, eastmotorsport. The spare parts have already arrived at their final destination. Fast service from Bra i Gasen AB. Thumbs up! I got 4 Keihin float needles that should fit my motorcycle carburetors (Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R). I heard from Dan at danST that Keihin needles are slightly different from Mikuni needles, so I'll check this when the carburetors are ready to be assembled. Anyway, the day after I ordered needles from Bra i Gasen, Dan notified me that he's sending a set of 4 needles – Free of charge! Wow, now I suddenly have two sets. Oh well.

Around noon today, my SFRO inspector called and informed me that my car build has been approved even after the extra check at SFRO. That's great. I did get a remark, though – the scrub radius was way too large considering the 8x13" wheels. Well, I have other original wheel dimensions that will work wonders. Just minutes after speaking with the SFRO inspector on the phone, Henrik Hansen got in touch with various documentation regarding the front suspension manufacturing. Unbeatable timing, especially since SFRO requested this just minutes before.

And just now, I felt like Walter White in Breaking Bad, there was white powder everywhere outside Andreas' garage. And his neighbor is a cop. However, I can assure you that it was only baking powder, nothing else, used when I sandblasted the carburetors. I can mention that it stung quite a bit in the nose and eyes. Should have bought Fazer's baking powder instead of Garant, haha. But I believe it did the trick anyway.

After blasting the carburetors reasonably clean, the next steps are to rinse them with water, then rinse with distilled water, and finally, let them dry. Then, everything needs to be assembled, hopefully without any issues, and mounted.

Reply to post: Nice to hear that you were satisfied with Bra i Gasen. Exciting to see it come to life soon.

Eight minutes before eight (closing time), I swung by Biltema and bought 3 cans of distilled water and a couple of brushes with slightly harder bristles. Then quickly headed home to rinse and brush the carburetors with the brushes.

After that, I dipped them in a bath of distilled water and rinsed all of them with what was left in the cans. The hairdryer did the trick for a short while to ensure that no water droplets would cause corrosion, etc.

Assembly is up next.

Reply to post: A lot of extra work with the carburetors 😏 But it will be like new in the end.

I've been watching some YouTube videos in the past few evenings; both tutorials about carburetors and films about other Mini Swift builds. Damn, it seems so fun! No, now I'm really itching to get the engine running!

Andreas came by yesterday evening and showed how all the parts should be assembled in one of the carburetors. Then it's just copy-paste for the rest. He dismantled them completely and took care of the ultrasonic cleaning, so he had his own pictures of how it looked before – both in terms of condition and where everything was.

Unfortunately, we concluded that we are missing parts, oh no! When I blasted them a while ago, I saw a small washer fly in all directions, but I managed to see and find it on the ground. However, another washer is missing. And two O-rings. And while everything is disassembled down to the smallest detail, might as well replace all the O-rings. Said and done, went to a Kawasaki-certified motorcycle workshop nearby, but nope, they only dealt with fuel injection, but they recommended Bra i Gasen AB. Haha!

Back home and ordered more stuff from them. Fast and very good service last time, and they did have all the items in stock this time too. Let's see if I get it delivered before the weekend.

O well, o well... några av O-ringarna jag fick i posten häromdagen var för stora. Synd.

Oh well, oh well... some of the O-rings I received in the mail the other day were too large. Too bad. Now it will take a while again before I assemble the motorcycle carburetors. But I managed to do some tinkering yesterday evening after all. The other small items are sorted in bags so that I don't mix them up or lose them. I steel-brushed the small screws that hold the float needle seat in place as they were quite rusty.

And a few more O-rings are missing, namely 4 small ones for the black caps (16038). Luckily, I've managed to find an exploded view for this carburetor model, with corresponding part numbers. Ordering should be accurate then.

Reply to post: A lot of small fiddling awaits...!

Yes, that's just the beginning. Extremely much more work with these motorcycle carburetors. I really hope it's worth the effort!

But when I get the right O-rings, the assembly will be quick. I hope. And when the package is complete, it should be mounted in place, and then the engine just needs to start!

Well, what's happening with this "big" little car project? Chasing spare parts for the motorcycle carburetor kit only to realize that we have to machine down the four needle valve seats about 1 mm for the new needle valves to sit deeper in the seat and actually seal. The length of the original needle and the new aftermarket needles is not the same. Hmm.

Andreas borrowed the tools and will see if he can machine them down in the coming days. He is really handy and resourceful, that Andreas. What would I do without him?

On the home front, I pondered the fitting of the instrument panel part against the bulkhead. During my first renovation around 1993, I cut out my own panels from a piece of Tarkett floor plank. But now it's going to be a bit more sophisticated, so I scanned the old, CAD-drawn shapes and cut out new panels in plastic using a laser. So neat. But damn, these plastic panels are so scratch-sensitive. So I got original Dash cards in lacquered cardboard. But well, it didn't look nice as it didn't match the pattern in the vinyl door panels. What I didn't know back then was that these Dash cards actually existed in the same vinyl-patterned version as the door panels. Check. And tonight I thought I'd try to attach these Dash cards in place. Easier said than done. Three hours later, I finally got one right. First, I had to move the grounding from the signal gadget because the wires built up too much upward so that the horizontal glove compartment surface would bulge too much. And then it turned out that these Dash cards differed a lot in both shape and size from the self-made laser-cut variants. So I had to carefully peel off the vinyl from the cardboard to then cut the cardboard to get the match a hundred percent right. And then fold and glue the vinyl back on. Phew! Tongue right in the mouth as those Dash cards with patterned vinyl are not very cheap. It would be a shame to cut a hole in the vinyl in a visible place by mistake.

But now one is done, at least. But I will probably need to adjust the fan nozzles with the accompanying hose a bit as they make my newly made Dash card bulge right where they sit. I'll have to gently heat with a heat gun and "flatten" both the hose and nozzle.

And earlier today, I amused myself by looking at various UK webshops. Could use some small parts. Will it ever end? Need brackets to adjust camber and caster. And a choke cable. Among other things. Let's see if there will be shipping, etc., now that the UK has actually left the EU.

And I hope we get the needle valve seats right shortly so that the needles sit well, allowing me to assemble the kit, mount it on the car, and turn the key for the third time.
