The 2001 American Le Mans Series was another historical event for BMW's distinguished time line. BMW AG participated again in the ALMS series for 2001 and had entered into the race with the new improved BMW E46 M3 GTR powered by the P60B40 4.0L V8 as well as its sister race car the BMW E46 M3 GTR that was powered by the P54B32 an in-line six 3.2L race engine. The two BMW E46 M3 GTR variants looked nearly identical and raced right alongside each other in the ALMS. BMW AG Motorsport works team Schnitzer raced the ALMS E46 M3 GTR V8 powered race car?s in blue and white livery and BMW NA Motorsport works team PTG raced one 2001 ALMS E46 M3 GTR V8 with the P60 engine and the rest of the BMW NA Motorsport PTG M3 GTR race car?s had been powered by the in-line six 3.2L race engine. BMW works team PTG did however stroke out the S54/P54B32 3.2L to a 3.4L motor for the ALMS series to increase horse power and torque essentially keeping the in-line six normally aspirated
