A FOB refers to a key ring or device that you attach your car keys to so that they don't get lost. While some serve only a decorative purpose, a wireless key FOB controls the locking system on your car. The 1996 Ford Explorer comes with a keyless entry system that requires a specific type of FOB in order to lock and unlock the doors. While your dealership should have provided you with a FOB, you can re-program it should something go wrong.
Insert the Explorer key into the ignition and turn it as far as possible before cranking the Ford engine. This is known as the "Run" ignition position.
Turn the key back to the base ignition position. This is the "Off" position and you will be able to remove the key. Do not remove the key from the ignition yet.
Repeat steps 1 and 2 another four times so that you have turned it from "Off" to "Run" for a total of 5 times. This must be done within 10 seconds. On the fifth and final turn, leave the key in the "Run" position and wait for the door locks to cycle on and off. This lets you know you have entered the Explorer FOB programming mode.
Press any button on the key FOB and wait for the door locks to cycle again. The remote will now be programmed to the Ford Explorer.
Turn the key to the "Off" position and remove the key. This exits the programming mode.
