Det händer minsann grejor i maj, juni och juli!

Den 25 april blev ju Minin godkänd av SFRO. En milstolpe i denna byggprocess och nu kvarstår några små justeringar innan det blir dags för Registreringsbesiktning.

Så under andra halvan av maj satte jag fart... med att bygga på skåpbilen. Ja, du läste rätt. Jag hade ju anmält mig till International Mini Meeting i Polen som hölls på flygfältet i Leszno den 28/5-1/6. En liten revansch från fjolårets flopp då IMM i Storbritannien ställdes in med kort varsel. Och där stod jag med en läcker Mini och en skåpbil som precis pimpats med bildekor inför just detta event.

Just därför var jag tveksam till att anmäla mig till IMM i Polen, men dessa Mini-events hålls av olika lokala aktörer och är alltså inte centralt styrt. All good med andra ord.

Nåväl, det blev till att beställa en massa prylar till skåpbilen och paketen levererades dagligen ett tag. Allt ifrån solpaneler, batteri, toa, utdragslådor, ljuddämpningsmattor, isolering, svart akustikpanel, gummimatta, filtmatta och galet mycket annat smått. Jag bygger ju ett varumärke runt Minin, och då behövs en rullande produktionsenhet där jag kan transportera Minin, sova, jobba, sitta och invänta rätt ljus och väder. Det är också tänkt att den ska agera som ett rullande showroom med tavelramar med mina posters som för övrigt kan köpas på min webbshop inom kort, webbadressen känner ni ju till.

Med alla beställningar på plats och ynka åtta dagar kvar tills avfärd mot Polen, satte jag igång med förvandlingen. Det blev uppstigning 04.01 varje morgon med febrilt arbete till 00.00 varje dag. Sista dagen dygnade jag 27 timmar för att få klart det sista men hann inte med allt, även om jag fick tummarna loss att printa ut ett urval av mina posters, vattenslipa, primerlacka, lacka och klarlacka nyinköpta plåtfälgar dagen innan avfärd, samt att designa och beställa ett Cornhole-spel mm veckan innan. Eftermiddagen innan avfärd ville jag byta till de nylackade fälgarna men däckfirman rådde till att låta dem härda minst en vecka. Fälgarna hade jag stressat igenom "lackboxen" i friggeboden med extra värme, haha. Nåja, det var ju mindre viktigt att få fälgarna klara egentligen, men hade det gått vägen hade det ju varit trevligt.

Farsan tog jag med mig på resan till Polen som hjälp för att lasta i och ur Minin, resa ett brandat uppblåsbart tält, och förstås låta honom också ta åt sig äran av hans fina arbetsinsats i detta 10-åriga bilbygge som lider mot sitt slut.

Farsan vaknade kl 05.00 på avfärdsdagen medan jag hade packade och stressade in i det sista. 06.30 styrde vi mot Trelleborg för 6 timmars resa med färja till Swinoujcie. Farsan meddelar att jag snarkade högljutt i restaurangen under hela resan. Det var ingen annan där under resan så det var skönt att få sova ikapp. Taggade till max gav vi oss iväg på finfin motorväg i Polen och anlände Leszno 4 timmar senare. Vi lastade ur Minin i kvällssolen och gjorde oss hemmastadda med sovsäck och madrass i skåpbilen. Natti natti.

Ingen tupp väckte oss på torsdagsmorgonen, däremot en brummande Mini som långsamt parkerade intill oss. Och tänk att en frukost kan smaka så bra. Bullar med mjukost och juice, sittandes på röda ramper som jag använder för att minska vinkeln på skåpbilen, haha.

Vi hade fått en kalasbra plats, precis intill matvagnarna och discohangaren på IMM. Och dit strömmade Mini-entusiasterna i mängder. Och visst sneglade de och dreglade de när de fick se mitt branding-kit; stripad skåpbil, läcker Mini, Airdome-tält, Cornhole Challenge-tävling där deltagare kunde vinna upp till 30% rabatt på första köpet på webbshopen. Väldigt många tog sig tiden att fråga och diskutera bygget sett till de tekniska utmaningarna och lösningarna men även designmässigt, både interiört och exteriört. Många thumbs up och miner som avslöjade att de minsann var imponerande och glada av att se denna lilla rackare IRL.

Farsan och jag växte förstås ytterligare av allt beröm och i diskussionerna lyfte jag också fram Andreas som varit till en väldigt stor hjälp med sin expertis och uppfinningsrikedom i bygget av motor mm.

Hela eventet, International Mini Meeting, var väldigt bra arrangerat även om det var en medelstor Mini-träff. Men det var trots allt en maffig upplevelse att se ca 1500 Minis, både den klassiska retrovarianten och några moderna, och uppemot 2000 entusiaster på plats. Nästa års IMM hålls i Portugal och under 2028 är det i Holland. Får se om det blir en tur dit.

Jag fick också äran att uppleva en frisk fläkt i 165 km/h i Tom's supercoola beiga Moke på motorvägen utanför flygfältet och jag returnerade tjänsten med att studiofotografera hans bil i all hast i flyghangaren. Och man träffade minsann många nya människor och knöt kontakter runtom i Europa, perfekt ifall man vill göra en Mini-tour framöver.

Under en seneftermiddag kom en stiligt klädd äldre italiensk herre fram och frågade "-How much"? Samtidigt som han gnuggade tummen och pekfingret på höger hand klassiskt "Money Money"-manér. Han verkade var väldigt intresserad av att köpa min Mini. Jag tackade för uppskattningen men avböjde, men han insisterade. "-How much"?. Han sa "-I write number on roof" då det var lite dammigt pga flygfältet. Och summan överträffade budet jag fick på Bilsport Custom Motor Show 2023 med råge! Har ni någonsin sett en haka falla ca 185 cm ner i marken? Något i den stilen. Men återigen, jag bygger ett varumärke kring Minin och utan den så har jag bara... en skåpbil. Och min Mini är ju min första bil överhuvudtaget.

Många entusiaster fick med sig rejält med härliga minnen från IMM och jag var nu rejält taggad att komma hem och fortsätta preppa och ställa iordning för yngsta dotterns Studentfest. Jag lämnade ju min stackars fru med all planering, inköp och en massa annat för att åka till IMM. Nåväl, trött men supernöjd fru och dotter när vi tänker tillbaka på en mycket lyckad Studentfest.

Öppnade garageporten av möttes av det fullkomliga kaos, precis som jag lämnade det och förträngt, efter att ha dygnat 27 timmar och bokstavligen kastat in grejor i garaget minuter före vi satte oss i skåpbilen och körde till Polen. Men men, man ska ju ha lite att göra på semestern, haha!

Things are certainly happening in May, June and July!

On April 25th, the Mini was finally approved by SFRO. A huge milestone in this build, and now there are only a few small adjustments left before it's time for the final registration inspection.

So, during the second half of May, I got cracking on? building the van. Yes, you read that right.

I had signed up for the International Mini Meeting in Poland, held at the airfield in Leszno from May 28th to June 1st. A little redemption after last year's disappointment, when the IMM in the UK was cancelled at short notice. There I was with a gorgeous Mini and a van that had just been fully wrapped specifically for that event.

That experience made me a little hesitant about signing up for IMM Poland, but these Mini events are organised independently by different local clubs rather than centrally controlled. All good, in other words.

So, it was time to order a ridiculous amount of stuff for the van, and for a while packages were arriving pretty much every day. Solar panels, battery, toilet, pull-out drawers, sound-deadening mats, insulation, black acoustic panels, rubber flooring, felt carpet and an insane amount of other bits and pieces.

After all, I'm building a brand around the Mini, and for that I need a rolling production unit. Somewhere I can transport the Mini, sleep, work, sit around waiting for the right light and weather, and eventually use as a mobile showroom with framed examples of my posters - which, by the way, will soon be available in my webshop. You already know the address.

With all the deliveries finally in place and a whopping eight days left before departure for Poland, I started the transformation.

Alarm: 04:01 every morning. Work until midnight. Repeat.

On the final day, I stayed awake for 27 hours trying to get everything finished - and still didn't manage it all.

Although, somehow, I did manage to print a selection of my posters, wet-sand, prime, paint and clear-coat a set of newly bought steel wheels the day before departure, while also designing and ordering a Cornhole game during the week before the event.

The afternoon before leaving, I wanted to fit the freshly painted wheels, but the tyre shop wisely suggested letting the paint cure for at least a week.

I'd already rushed them through my highly sophisticated "paint booth" in the garden shed with some extra heat. Haha. Never mind. The wheels weren't exactly essential. But it would have looked nice.

I brought dad along for the trip to Poland to help load and unload the Mini, put up the branded inflatable tent and, of course, to let him enjoy some of the credit for all the work he has put into this ten-year car build that is finally approaching the finish line.

Dad woke up at 05:00 on departure day while I was still frantically packing and sorting out the final details. At 06:30 we headed towards Trelleborg for the six-hour ferry crossing to Swinoujcie.

Apparently, I snored loudly in the restaurant for most of the journey. According to dad. Fortunately, there was basically nobody else there, so I got the chance to catch up on some badly needed sleep.

Fully recharged and ridiculously excited, we hit the surprisingly nice Polish motorways and arrived in Leszno about four hours later. We unloaded the Mini in the evening sun, rolled out the sleeping bags and mattresses in the van and made ourselves at home. Nighty night.

No rooster woke us on Thursday morning. Instead, it was the rumble of a Mini slowly pulling up and parking beside us. And who knew breakfast could taste that good? Bread rolls with soft cheese and juice, sitting on the red loading ramps I normally use to reduce the angle into the van. Five-star Mini accommodation.

We'd managed to get a brilliant spot at IMM, right next to the food trucks and the disco hangar. Mini enthusiasts were constantly streaming past.

And yes... there were definitely a few sideways glances and perhaps even a little drooling when people saw the full Austin Mini GTi branding kit: Wrapped van. The Mini. Branded Airdome tent. And the Cornhole Challenge, where people could win up to 30% off their first purchase from the upcoming webshop.

A lot of people took the time to stop, ask questions and talk about the build - everything from the technical challenges and engineering solutions to the interior and exterior design.

There were plenty of thumbs up and facial expressions that made it pretty obvious people were genuinely impressed - and happy to finally see this little rascal in real life. Naturally, dad and I grew about ten centimetres taller from all the compliments.

And during those conversations I also made sure to mention Andreas, who has been an enormous help throughout the build with his expertise, ingenuity and work on the engine and countless other details.

The International Mini Meeting itself was very well organised. It might have been a medium-sized IMM by historical standards, but seeing around 1,500 Minis - mostly classics with a handful of modern ones - and close to 2,000 Mini enthusiasts gathered in one place was still quite something. Next year IMM moves to Portugal, followed by the Netherlands in 2028.

We'll see if the little beast makes either journey.

I also had the privilege of experiencing a rather refreshing 165 km/h breeze in Tom's ridiculously cool beige Moke on the motorway outside the airfield. I returned the favour by quickly dragging his car into the aircraft hangar for an improvised studio photoshoot.

And that was another great thing about IMM: meeting loads of new people and making connections all across Europe. Rather useful if a certain Mini tour happens sometime in the future...

Then, late one afternoon, a stylish older Italian gentleman walked over to me. "How much?" At the same time, he rubbed his thumb and index finger together in the universal "money, money" gesture. He seemed very interested in buying my Mini.
I thanked him for the compliment but politely declined. He insisted. "How much?" Then he said something along the lines of: "I write number on roof?" The Mini had collected a thin layer of dust from the airfield, so apparently the roof had temporarily become a negotiation table. And the number he suggested absolutely smashed the offer I received at Bilsport Custom Motor Show back in 2023. Have you ever seen someone?s jaw drop approximately 185 centimetres straight into the ground? Something like that.

But the answer was still no. I'm building an entire brand around this Mini. Without it, I basically just have... a van. And besides, this Mini isn't simply a project car. It was my very first car.

A lot of enthusiasts left IMM with some fantastic memories, and so did we.

Now I was properly fired up to get home and continue with the next project: Preparing for my youngest daughter's graduation party.

I had, after all, left my poor wife at home dealing with the planning, shopping and about a million other things while I disappeared off to Poland with dad and a Mini. Oops. But looking back, both wife and daughter were exhausted, happy and very pleased with what turned out to be a fantastic graduation party.

And then... I opened the garage door. Absolute. Chaos. Exactly as I had left it - and conveniently managed to erase from my memory - after staying awake for 27 hours and literally throwing things into the garage minutes before dad and I jumped into the van and headed for Poland.

Oh well. You need something to do during your summer holiday, right? Haha!
